ChronoSport UDT
ChronoSport UDT
Old favorite of mine just back from a service. pretty cool piece for its time. It has a backlight, dual time zone display, chronograph, hourly chime and alarm, and day/date

Cool looking watch. Can you give me some specs and history on this one? I haven't seen one before, and let me guess IWW did the service right?

Nice Ana-Dig!
Re: ChronoSport UDT
Hey Guys,
Thanks for the replies. I first saw the Chronosport UDT when I was a boot 2ndlt in the Marines. I think it was like 500 new and I couldn't afford it at the time. This was back in the late 90's I guess. I then scoured the net for it years later but they had stopped making it. I think the company was sold out or dissolved. I eventually tracked this one down which was NIB from a company in norwalk CT named Chronoserv that bought a lot of parts etc to service this specific model. I've had it about 5 years or so. Never had any trouble with it at all. But I am pretty good about getting my watches serviced. So that may help. Plus I don't beat the heck out of it or use it in the water. It's pretty much a daily wearer type. I am concerned the ana/digi may be too susceptible to damage if used really hard, but I could be overly cautious.
Not sure if the UDT was ever an actual 'issue' watch of any military services/units as some write ups have claimed. But it looks pretty tactical to me. Very similar to the Breitling that was also made back in the 80's but that model's name I can't recall. I changed the "pvd" band that came with it which was pretty flimsy. The one on now is after market but much thicker and feels better. I had a local watch guy change the battery and pressure test it. Took 8 days.

I don't know much about these watches or if they were issued by the military, but there's a report by Navy Experimental Diving Unit, testing some digital watches (some Seikos, Casios and one Chronosport UDT):ScottoLaw wrote: Not sure if the UDT was ever an actual 'issue' watch of any military services/units as some write ups have claimed.

Also check the dive watch test from the '50, it's fun to read...
Re: ChronoSport UDT
Love that watch. Interesting fact, Army SF local purchased about 500 of them for the teams back in the 80's... The Breitling version is the pluton, and both were manufactured in the same factory.... History is cool.

Rambo would be proud of that one. Well until he traded it in for the Panerai.
I would love to have a Chronosport UDT. It's just plain old school cool.

I'm sure Breitling would have liked to use a swiss caliber but there was no one with those functions...Diaboliq wrote:It's kinda unnatural to see "BREITLING JAPAN"

Yep these were very popular with service members years ago. I too wanted one, but didn't have the extra cash at the time. The logo always reminded me of the Nautica logo later on after I was exposed to that brand.

Your UDT looks well cared for. Great pic. I've been wearing mine recently. Great clean dial.
They look bad ass on OD nylon. Thx for the pic and posts.

Re: ChronoSport UDT
My UDT is on sale right now on eBay. I'm the original owner. Gonna miss that thing. I bought it in a CT dive shop around 86.
Re: ChronoSport UDT
Its the Type I's that are finicky. They tend to go to shit when you change the battery.
The one you have is usually referred to as a Type II B. The A's had registers only, and the C's had a combination dive/compass rose bezel.
As mentioned before, Brietling made a ton of identical models, as well as others. The same movements were also used by Bulova, Pulsar, Seiko and others - usually a cheaper way to source a replacement movement.
Chronoserve is still in business. Best Fix Watches in Texas also services UDTS - and often has refurbished models for sale (way overpriced IMHO). Neither outfit will service the Type I models.
