Tough call--sacrificing 2 Heuers for a Red Sub seems like a good plan but wouldn't fault you for going after the McQueen, that baby is hot..

Red Sub.

You give respect, you'll get respect - you just don't know your place.

The red sub looks like any other sub except the red letters the McQueen stands out.

As much as I love those Red Subs, I'd say go for the Explorer...that big orange hand is as cool as they come. You don't see nearly as many around.

THIS ^^^. I love the Red Sub, but in reality it is just another vintage sub with red letters. It is for collectors. Are you a collector or an enthusiast that actually wears the watches in your collection? You can get a totally badass vintage sub for way less than the red sub, and wear it with less anxiety. Plus, you can flip it easier. CHances are you will need to put something ($$$) into a red sub unless you find one that is totally pristine, and THAT is really going to cost you. The EXP is way cooler and rare IMO. Now, a COMEX Sea Dweller ......

The red lettering makes all the difference for me. A vintage sub is great, but it needs some spicing up to compete with my SD, so it'd have to be red or gilt, and really really nice gilt dial are mega bucks.
I'd figure either the Sub or Expy would need a service, so that's a non-factor. And I wouldn't buy one that need any cosmetic work besides a bezel insert change.

What do you guys think about a domed crystal on a Red? It kind of gives it that DRSD vibe.

Domed crystal is cool, but in most cases, you will give up water resistance. Maybe not a good idea in a watch where ALL the value is in the dial.
