Bad Timing

Post by koda240 » Sat Jan 19, 2013 7:38 pm

Only you guys can appreciate this.....I had a meeting scheduled last week for a potential new client. As the three of them came in to sit down at the conf. table I quickly sized up their pieces. One of the gentlemen and a gal both had PAMs on. The girl had a black Pam on an aftermarket strap....a nice one. I didn't want to be too much of a nerd but did compliment them. Meanwhile, I had just taken my 243 to the shop the day before to get cleaned up a bit. I ran out and had nothing else on which never happens. Aside from feeling naked, I was in a perfect position to have my PAM and didn't. So pissed. As I claimed to be a watch nerd they probably thought I was full of shit. Hhahaha. Oh well, if they become clients they will see it. If they don't it wasn't meant to be.

Only added this pic because a thread is more fun with a pic.

If they become clients and next time you are wearing the Panny, they will think you bought to impress them. LOL

David, the moral of the story is; Panerai are too common, you need a JLC.

not only are they common, but outside of 'Risti and WIS forums and circles, many panerai (along with Rolex) owners are not WIS and their knowledge of fine watches is Rolex, and maybe, Cartier. they wouldn't know JLC from a hole in the wall.

i don't know what you shared with them on your watch nerd credentials, but the most that i would have done was just complimented them on their nice timepieces. if they were watch enthusiaists, then they might have caught on that you might know something about watches (which leaves something to discuss if the relationship ever develops) and if they were the unenlightened sort, they would have just accepted the compliment at face value and moved on.

but that's just my style. i rarely comment to strangers, which includes business first-time contacts on their fine timepieces. if they notice what i'm wearing and care to start a conversation, i'm good with that but i always leave the ball in their court on first or second meetings. otherwise, they could interpret it like like you're trying to impress, esp. if they're on the hiring side of the relationship - compliments are a common 'selling' or opening conversation tactic.

I was kidding about that. We actually met he and Sam at a Sushi bar; we threw our car keys in the fish bowl and they were the couple we ended up going home with. :o
