Diving with a dive watch.
Diving with a dive watch.
So I recently bought an orient thresher. It's only resistant to 100m and lacks a screw down crown. How deep should I feel comfortable taking it? I will probably be freediving so no more than 30-50 feet most of the time. But repetitively up and down.

Re: Diving with a dive watch.
So you joined the DWC without an actual dive watch? Bold move.
The least I would dive with to 30' would be a proper 1000m rated dive watch with He release valve.

Repetitively 8" is as deep as I go, otherwise there are mechanical/hydraulic issues.

Re: Diving with a dive watch.
You guys DIVE with your dive watches? Last summer, my kid sprayed me with a hose while I was wearing my Sea Dweller. I had Rolex do a complete overhaul on it - you can't be too careful.
It's like those astronauts who actually took their Speedmasters into space. I mean, what were they thinking?
To the OP - sorry; sometimes the snark just spills out (and I'm not even touching on the "repetitively up and down" comment).

Re: Diving with a dive watch.
Lol I thought that would come back to bite me in the ass but I find it kind of interesting. I'm still new in the watch world and I'm still learning the prejudices, but for now the snarkiness here is appreciated so that I don't make a fool of myself in a professional context later. So as long as I'm showing you my chin, feel free to throw some punches at it. I'll stop now though.
As for the post, I like diving. I grew up near water and I've been in it as long as I can remember. Now I own a dive watch. I now know not to combine the two. thanks.

Re: Diving with a dive watch.
Unfortunately, that's not really a dive watch. I wouldn't dive - even free dive - with a watch rated less than 200m.gcsduck wrote:Lol I thought that would come back to bite me in the ass but I find it kind of interesting. Snarkiness, yep we got plenty of that here.
Rather than take a chance with your new watch, grab a used gshock or BASM, and you'll be good to go till you can grab a U1.
And welcome aboard.

I agree with Paul, only dive with a dive rated watch. Sports watches are not meant for any kind of pressure only for introducing shallow water at most.

Rated to 100m, free-dive to 99m. It'll be fine. As long as the seals are good. I free dive my Speedies all the time...well, used to when carmel and Monterey were close (sigh). Never had a leak, never had a problem...even while using the pushers.
That whole article was nothing more than Chicken Little-esque garbage. And Paul, you should should know better than to believe that crap. "Sudden changes" in water pressure...really? I would think that that kind of change would have more of an effect on my body than my watch. I've been bent...it sucks. And I didn't give a shit about my watch when it happened either.
I already showed the calculations for dynamic water pressure. Look them up. You'd have to be going 50+ fps to start changing the dynamic force on the seals. I don't know about you guys but last time I swam that fast I was on a boat.
What's the saying? HTFU!!! And I'll add to that...HTFU you pillow biters!!

I have to say that the moderator's have really failed here to kill this thread.
It's just this kind of thinking - that people can dive with a dive watch - that leads to things like sex in the back door and binge drinking.
And what kind of world would THAT be...

lol.. first of all, you're NUTS, so I would advise anyone reading your advice to do the EXACT opposite

Actually, I completely agree with that article being a pile of bull - ESPECIALLY all that crap about sudden pressure. What I thought I was sending was the chart that describes water resistance - on this, I disagree with your '100 meter, dive to 99 meter' stuff. I've seen several watches over the years flood out during dive ops that were rated at 100m. Most of the crap that people buy that says 100m sucks. Yep, a speedy is much better built - but I wouldn't dive with one either because I'd cry like a baby if I flooded it out. Again, you are certifiable, soooo... On the upside, if a shitty watch dies on a 50' dive, no real loss.

True 'nuff. I think there's a difference between some POS watch that says 100 m on the case or dial, and something that's actually had a recent wet test to 10 bar.deepcdvr wrote:Actually, I completely agree with that article being a pile of bull - ESPECIALLY all that crap about sudden pressure. I propose that if it's passed a proper professional pressure proving, it's perfectly ... um ... plunge-worthy.
