Send your bud over to

I have to say............that Glycine is a pretty cool option.
Your buddy can definitely upgrade to a nice watch if he has a grand to spend. The Seiko Tuna is a killer suggestion for the things that your buddy does in real life. Tough as hell watch and cool on the wrist.
Here's a TAG Aquaracer I just saw on watchrecon from Rob at Toppers (good seller) for $1100 that you might be able to pick up for a grand.

The TAG is a very solid option.

Have passed along all the excellent recommendations and sent him to watchrecon. Says his head is swimming from all the choices.
While I don't think it's fair to legislate taste or preference, I did stress that it might be worthwhile to pick up something original used (Fortis, Glycine, etc) rather than a homage new (Steinhart, Helson, etc.) Soon as I hear what Erik picks I'll pass it along.
Thank you all very much for taking the time to offer suggestions. Really do learn something new here everyday and appreciate all of your input. -Patrick

Helson. He bought a Helson Shark Diver 40mm. He's over the moon and that's good enough for me. Thanks again for all your suggestions... I'm digging a lot of them myself.

I would get a Fathoms homage just to be different - if I wanna go the homage route.
