Ready for something different.

Post by Seth » Wed Aug 31, 2011 5:13 am

Ready for a new watch. I have been on a Rolex hunt, but can't find any way to choke up $4k+ in the middle of all the relocation chaos.

Budget is <$1700. Criteria is WHITE dial, 42mm or smaller, proper water resistance.

I'll take some interesting suggestions. Things that are out: chinese micros, dress watches, and anything that has to be worn on leather.

How much would one of the Omega Seamaster GMTs run?

Omega is OUT. Too much bullshit with their customer service with the original SMP.

Seth, I can't think of a white dial that meets your other specs.

Thoughts about Ball? Maybe the Engineer Hydrocarbon?

Love them. Omega level of fit and finish. Bracelets aren't as nice as Omega IMO but adequate. I've owned just about all of them and they all kept killer time and personally I like the tubes but some can be over the top with them. I think Ball is underated.

What is "proper" water resistance? Damasko DC67 is 100m, is that enough?

I like the white dialed Kobold a lot.... but I'm finally over that obsession.

Proper water resistance is wearable in the water.... I don't dive, but I'm in the pool a lot.

Ball EH is a killer suggestion. Ball isn't even in my radar, but no doubt these are top notch underrated pieces.

OK, trying a bit harder here...
How about the Squale white dial? Or the Stowa Prodiver white? MG Marinus?

Kind of digging the mad cow. Anyone have actual hands on with it?

The Ball Mad Cow EH is a cool watch but it wears big....
In my opinion, the crown lock is a pain in the ass and the butterfly clasp
on the bracelet is uncomfortable...

On the Archimede, I bought the Pilot watch and flipped it a month later..
It was a decent watch but that's it....No real substance to it....

What about a Fortis or Tutima or Baume & Mercier Capeland????

Mike

I agree with the suggestions above. May not be your cup of team, but I have always been a bit intrigued by the Oris Diver with the white, all lume dial, and I think you could get it for a fraction of your budget.

Owned both white and black dials. Cool piece-I agree with Mike in that the Ball Hydrocarbon series wear bigger than the specs would indicate. They are wrist huggers though and very comfortable to wear. More so than most watches I've owned. The white dial is guilloche if I recall corrrectly. Its a Ti watch and the bracelet has Ti center links and cold steel outer links for balance. It works well. Its a nice piece overall and built well.

I owned an EHC GMT I for a while (black dial), and it's dimensions are basically the same as the Mad Cow, though being all steel, it's heavier. My thoughts? Killer watch for the money, great fit and finish, built like a tank, amazing bracelet, and of course, the tubes offer terrific legibility in the night. Bear in mind that the Mad Cow does get a bit creative with the tritium, though, and not everyone is enamored of Ball's "digital" trit tube digits. If you dig 'em, though, then perhaps you've found your watch.

Adam

Oh and I think the caseback on the MC is steel as well-again for balance. It is a well balanced watch.
