Fantastic 'Talking Watches' segment on Hodinkee this week.
http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/with-jason-singer-video
Particularly of interest to vintage lovers. I'm sure many of you have already watched this, but thought I'd post it for those who may have missed it.

Wow. I have no idea how an ED physician has that kind of cash...not from his job alone.

So cool. The Rolex sports watch thing fascinates me. Rolex itself really became big in the 80's, but a lot of it was Wall Street guys wearing gold or the two tone Datejusts. I could be wrong, but I think the sports watch thing really took off when Rolex remodeled the Daytona with the Zenith movement. All of a sudden, everyone had to have that watch, and it was only produced in limited quantities.

Was cool. Rolex bubble backs can still be found use to see them for sale once in a while at the Alameda antique fair . The 1980's sounded like the best time to buy a Rolex sub for under 500 bucks at a NAWCC show you can still get deals at those shows remember most of those guys collect pocket watches and just sell wristwatches for a little profit and use that price guide that's right on for pocket watch but the wristwatches are all under valued if some use that book at the NAWCC shows you cane some times get a good deal like I did on a speedmaster for 1400 bucks. I liked what he said when he was at a NAWCC show in the 1980 and some one dropped a Rolex Daytona on the floor and used his foot to kick it closer to pick up consider it of not much value dam. Mite go to one of those NAWCC show in Sparks Nevada in the summer.

Yep it was unreal.... those bubblebacks look cool.
At the end he said that collecting sport rolex watches wasn't a thing in the early 90's.... Daytona's for $250? If true, that's crazy!

Had missed this actually Jared, so thanks a lot !
Honestly seeing a lot of those watches for the first time. Extraordinary watches
sir, and never actually heard the term "bubble back". Always learning new things
with this hobby. ..By the way, that was so funny hearing how the guy kicked
that Daytona across the floor like that.

Thanks again Jared !

Another level... followed by - another level. The sport Rolex scene in the 80's story is crazy. Funny how celebrity can change the game so quick.

This was very cool from a collector point of view. Still, I now wonder how special the collection is to him? He clearly has the means to buy literally anything and everything he wants. As Dukerukes noted, that's not something he did on his income. The dude had a series of watches made in all metals, for Pete's sake- ss, yellow gold, white gold, platinum. Crazy dollars. Unfathomable dollars. I'm most def not the jealous type, but good God that's hard to relate to. Still, good on 'im. He is completist if nothing else.

I've been reading comments about the video on Hodinkee and IG, and apparently he was working on publishing a book about Bubblebacks and is on an advisory board at Philips. He seems to be extremely passionate about watches. I'd certainly love to have a few drinks with him and talk shop.

Simply amazing collection.
Seems he had a crystal ball back in the 80s and bought what he could when it was A LOT cheaper. Imagine what you'd have now if you could go back to the 60s knowing what you do now.. To think Pateks could be ordered through your local Monkey Wards then. Granted they were still expensive but I'd be the only house on the block without color TV or a microwave.

Even the Daytonas if they were really going for $250 per in the '80s. Could have bought twenty of them for the price of one Rolex today, and look how they've appreciated.

Bullshit. The prices have increased but not like that. He was most likely implicitly justifying the huge sums he spent on watches for people who know him in real life. I do that to people at my office who somehow are aware of the cost of whatever I'm wearing.

Probably $250 is too low, but I do remember my godfather, who is a jeweler, sold a used Submariner to a client for $600 in 1992. It was used but in good condition (at least aesthetically).

An interesting aspect is most uber wealthy people I've known with serious money collections in art and other fields don't advertise what they have. I suppose their insurers don't like it.

My house is not worth what a couple of those watches alone are valued at in the market!

Not my cup of tea, but still a spectacular collection I can appreciate, and he seems like a genuinely passionate collector.
