Inevitable, but not easy

Post by mattcantwin » Wed Aug 26, 2015 10:46 am

We had to put down one of our two Bull Terriers this morning.

Elizabeth was the older dog, 13 years.

During the night she started panting severely, had difficulty standing, was walking unsteadily; holding her head at an odd angle.

I brought her in to the vet this morning.

She asked me if Elizabeth might have ingested any chemicals; which she hadn't. The vet said she had most likely had a stroke
and suggested we could consult a neurologist if we wanted.

My wife was too upset to go; I decided to put her down. I stayed with her for the injection (I've done this before) crying the entire time.

Always amazes me how deep into your heart a pet can climb.

Rest in peace, Elizabeth.

I'm so sorry, Matt. I've been there myself too many times. Remember the good times you had over the years. What a beautiful girl she was.

So sorry, Matt. One of the hardest things I've had to do.

Take care,

Wow sorry to hear Matt. Been there before with one of my dogs, and cried like a baby. It would be even harder with the one I have now. To say they are family is an understatement.

Really sorry Matt. I had our last dog put to sleep at home, laying out in the sun in the front yard that she loved. Cried like a baby right on the front lawn. It really is painful.

Thanks, all, for the kind words.

As sad as it is, it's so peaceful to hold your dog as they seem to drift off to sleep, not even a whimper.

Probably five minutes or more before I could walk away from her.

So sorry Matt. I'm sure you gave her a good life and she appreciated having you there comforting her at the end. Our dog is a 10 year old terrier with no signs of slowing. My wife has never had a dog and was never a dog person before - and has remarked how they transform you.

Sorry to hear this, Matt. Our last dog was boxer/bull terrier; same deal with a stroke and having to put him down. It went down *exactly* as you described for us, too. Still remember it like it was yesterday; some things form indelible tattoos on our emotions.

Blessings, my man. Blessings.

I'm so sorry Matt. You did the right thing and as much as it sucks, remember that you were his world. Holding him during his last moments is all he would want.
