7yo too soon to get watch? Need ideas for son

Post by sierra11b » Sat May 02, 2020 8:26 am

Thinking of getting my son an analog field watch or small diver (preferably quartz). Something kid’s or women’s size and with 16mm lugs so he can wear NATO straps.

Any ideas?

He’s been studying analog time keeping as part of homeschooling and getting pretty good. I was thinking about a small reward.

I bought my son (8 at that time, very skinny) one of these and it wore great on him:

30mm diameter, 16mm lug width.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GT ... UTF8&psc=1

Another option, almost the same size but twice the price:

https://www.amazon.com/Timex-Womens-T2P ... r=1-4&th=1

Also bought a couple of 16mm nato straps from cheapestnatostraps.com for him.

As with a lot of things, the watch disappeared a couple of months later lol

This is the last one I bought him because he saw my "gold" 5600... He's now 10 and my G Shocks 5600 fit him.

I'm pretty sure I got my first watch around that time.

If he wants one, I say get him one :)

Start with a cheap Timex or Casio calculator watch, and maybe a fun watch with his favorite cartoon or play character.

My daughter is almost 6 and desperately wants to wear my watches lol.

Go for it. I think I was rocking a Snoopy and the Red Baron hand-wound Timex when I was 5 or 6.

I’d go with Timex for either digital or analog. Lots of styles and affordable.

My daughter loves watches. Got her her first one when she was 5!

Actually I remembered that the first watch Héctor got was a Lego watch.

J Crew used to have good deal on this camp watch with a couple straps.
https://www.timex.com/mk1-military-36mm ... reen&cgid=

I also picked up a Club G (Casio GXS-900) for my son at that age. It was about $25 NOS on eBay. (They rebadged these “Mini-G” as JDMs and as ”Baby-G” for US at Macy’s, etc.)

This was my son’s first watch. Yoda, I think it was.

That’s actually pretty cool. He’s a lego master for his age and also the total Star Wars geek.

I think I’ll try this first as kohl’s has Darth Vader on sale for $15.

See if I can work out a deal with him. If the can master analog by the end of the summer I’ll get him a BabyG

Got two for $30 shipped (darth, bb8) with some small promo codes.

Thanks everyone!

My boys liked the Pokémon gshock that Topper was giving away as part of a promotion recently. Though most days they wear no watch.

A tradition in our family that my parents bought their kids and grand children a watch on their 7th birthday. Having lost my parents before my kids were born, it's a tradition I kept up. Don't make it too easy by getting a digital is my only advice, unless he understands the big hand, little hand thing already

I agree that they need analog. Regardless, they will either not wear it, or scratch it all to hell.

Those are cool. My kid loves Pokémon and can probably name every single one.

Man he’s a total geek but I love him for it. Plus it’s a square and would match the Steel G I drunk purchased last night from Topper :shifty:

My boy was about 6 when I got him a ladies sized Zodiac diver from Costco. I think it was about a hundred bucks. He loved it.

Oh man, had missed this somehow Eric, and didn't get to help. :(
Was going to say that anything from Timex, or Casio would be just
perfect. But then you went with Star Wars, which is out of this world !

Think you made an awesome choice, and he will really love those !

May the Force be with you guys !!
