The 7 (now 8) phases of watch flipping

Post by djh1201 » Thu Jan 13, 2022 11:47 am

Never really thought about it before, but this pretty much sums it up (at least for me),

Lust - How did I miss this watch? I must have it!
Courtship - How many reviews can I read, and YouTube Videos can I watch, how much time can I spend on Google Images?
Consumation - Your package has been delivered!
Bliss - This is the perfect watch, my Grail, I will never sell it!
Contentment - Well, maybe its not perfect, it has a few flaws, but I still love this watch!
Disenchantment - Its a good watch, I still like it, but there are others that are catching my eye...
Divorce - New watch ordered, funds are needed, it must go!
Regret - Why did I sell that watch, I miss it! Think I need to buy it again...

Exactly! Expect most of us are married, so maybe we're substituting watches for affairs...

Safer and ultimately cheaper!

Courtship is the one I enjoy the most. But its nice when it stops in Contentment. Only has happened to me with the BB58 and the Seiko Willard. Speedy I sold but got another one, that's the 8th phase "Dammit I shouldn't have sold that one".

Ask Brice for more info on the 8th phase (re: Pelagos).

Very good.

There are also the watches you immediately know are a mistake the moment they arrive.

I've sold at least 2 watches without wearing them for more the 5 minutes & several more that didn't last a day.

Well done. I'm in the contentment stage for the most part, but there's one Tudor I'm trying to land that has more demand than supply, so I'm stuck between courtship and consumation. Part of me hopes I lost interest before consumation.

I find myself in that “separation/reconciliation” stage (not on the list) before the divorce . Taking pictures of the watch I want to sell….putting it back on for last last time…posting the sale and then withdrawing the sale…am I alone….I don’t think so

I’m on the edge of bliss and contentment. Love my Sub no date and Planet Ocean, am content with my Tudor Panda, Fortis, Hamilton’s, etc.

Made the decision to scale down to a single watch box of 10 total, so I’ll be moving a dozen pieces soon, with the box and all of the Aqualands/ProMasters (7) likely going as a set. Sold a Panerai and 10 straps together yesterday, and the X-33 and Ti EcoZilla will go soon as well.

That's so funny David, and even though I never have sold a watch myself,
it really does seem like to be an honest to goodness blueprint of all of the
different phases so many go through. :) You basically nailed every
single stage. It's all right there, or here above ! ;)

Thanks so much sir !!!

Step 9: Compromise

Think two dozen Rolex have passed through my hands in the last decade and now I’m okay with my SPB117J1 as an explorer alternative

Awesome! I used to lust after some of these higher-end watches, but lately I've been quite content in the sub $2k range (and mostly sub $1k). Funny, because I finally have the money that I could easily play in the deep end...

For some of us, this is so true…

I hope to fine more contentment time as I refine my tastes and have learned what I like and what I dont like.

I have a friend who never sells, I think he is slowly accumulating drawers full of watches!
