Tudor Black Bay Root Beer GMT
Tudor Black Bay Root Beer GMT
I've always had a soft spot for the root beer GMT, and I like the general concept. But I wish they had reduced the case size and thickness, and I wish they had included a jubilee bracelet option. Plus the large, gold crown is a bit much for me. All in all I'd give Tudor a solid B/B+ on this one.

I sure it will be almost as difficult to pick one up as is a Rolex GMT. Otherwise I like this one, but would have been really nice if it was all stainless.

Tudor is getting more and more Rolexish...
Watch collector since 1989
Re: Tudor Black Bay Root Beer GMT
They always have been. Sure, they have some of their "own" models, but their roots are obviously Rolex, and they seem to be targeting buyers who like the Rolex look but can't afford it. Or who like the older Rolex models that Rolex doesn't make anymore. And people feel better about buying a Rolex "homage" from Tudor, because it's all part of the same company (as opposed to buying them from Steinhart or the like, not that there's anything wrong with that if that's what someone prefers).

If you look back over the last 30 years, the Tudors that everyone likes are basically slightly funky versions of standard Rolex designs. The uniquely tudor watches are often total shit.

I agree, with the exception of the original Hydronaut 89190. That one was a unique Tudor that had just enough Rolex dna to make it a good mix between a Rolex Sub and the 2nd generation Hydronaut which looked like trash.JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Wed Mar 30, 2022 7:09 amIf you look back over the last 30 years, the Tudors that everyone likes are basically slightly funky versions of standard Rolex designs. Re: Tudor Black Bay Root Beer GMT
To me, the first Hydronaut is almost desirable but totally incomparable to a blue lollipop Tudor Sub. Those Tudors that were just one step too far from Rolex (for me) represent a lot of value for collectors who like them -- I can't imagine that will ever be the case for the ones that came after that but before the BB generation watches. Those watches are just tooMr_Pacman wrote: ↑Wed Mar 30, 2022 7:44 amI agree, with the exception of the original Hydronaut 89190. On edit: I think there's a clear niche for Tudor to sell watches based on old Rolex designs that people still want but Rolex themselves won't sell. Tudor has a somewhat compelling Oysterquartz knock off, for instance, that I've thought about buying. This BB Explorer 2 is another pretty clear example.

The monte carlo chronograph (re-released as the heritage chrono) was cool and a pretty unique design. Beyond that, "original" Tudors don't do all that much for me. I wish they'd re-release the Ranger in a smaller case size and with a date. I'd be a buyer.JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Wed Mar 30, 2022 7:09 amIf you look back over the last 30 years, the Tudors that everyone likes are basically slightly funky versions of standard Rolex designs. Can see what you are saying Jeff, and even though I guess in general I give
the watch an A+, it would be terrific to see a slightly smaller version as
well. Along with some different bracelet options. Because, just like they say,
variety is the spice of life right?!
In any case, they are still great to see, so thanks very very much !!!

I see it this way, Rolex is moving upscale, and who better than Tudor to Rolex's place, I think we will see Tudor also leveling up a bit over time, and fill those shoes quite nicely. Omega has lost is equal footing with Rolex, and now it's Tudor that comparisons will start being made. And, at least Tudor is doing more creative things with their designs, something lacking with Rolex.

I just can’t stand the baton hands. Other than that I like what they do but the hands are a big no for me. However the new GMT Pro might have me changing my mind, but just on that model.
Yes, Rolex is going for a different market than 20 years ago.

I liked it a lot more in person than I expected. Pics don’t do it justice. Great colors and warm tones.

Just came across this from Monta (pre-order sold out).
Not root beer, but looks sharp.

Are the markers gold colored or is that just lighting?mattcantwin wrote: ↑Sun Apr 03, 2022 1:29 pmJust came across this from Monta (pre-order sold out).

Gold colored.
The Skyquest gilt dial features a multidimensional rehaut and applied indices.
The galvanized matte finish perfectly compliments the gold markers while the red text adds a sporty touch.

I really like it. Can't afford it, can't afford a Rolex either but it looks well done.
