Resco Rtac? Internal bezel and quartz, though.
hmm there's one on recon

I didn't think that outside bezel rotated tho - but it must for GMT function
I don't think the outside bezel rotates, but the inner one does. This is actually one of the models I have never owned (due to the size).
That's what I thought. Without the rotating outer bezel, it only tells local time..
It has a GMT hand.
Damn - just noticed that! Likely the reason outer bezel doesn't rotate

I'll let him know. Guy online has his up for trade..

Here’s an outside the box thought. Paul is about as OG as it gets around here. Maybe all of us could kick in a bit to buy his kid the Ares.

Paul, I’m betting the Hamilton might grow on you with the lume,
and work for you. :) Because it is tough finding a GMT having a
countdown bezel. And I thought the Fortis Cosmonauts just
might be a good one at first. But wow, that one is way above the
$1000 sir. ..But I did find this Traser called the Pathfinder.

Might this work for you?

^^^^ Again, still an elapsed time bezel, not count down.

Paul’s son is looking for a “mission timer” type bezel such as found on the Synchron Military.

There really aren’t many options out there, unfortunately.

Alpina, Midos, and Certina have the most cost conscious true GMT movement watches on the market (next to the new Seiko GMT movement I guess).

A great option would be an Alpina Alpiner4 GMT with a custom bezel insert.

This guy except with a countdown bezel insert would be perfect.

Paul, does he specifically need a countdown bezel or countdown timer function?

Henry, you’re a good man - really appreciate the gesture, but the kid (he’s 6’6” btw) just made Lieutenant Commander and he’s wife makes 70 bucks an hour working for Orion - they are doing well financially - he just doesn’t want to spend that money on a watch

He’s thinking of finding a Seiko mod guy to build him one. I asked Carlo but he’s a no go on GMTs…

Thank you. I've found it to be an accurate, well wearing, watch that punches well above the cost I paid for it. (I bought it from either Ashford or Joma and I'm pretty certain it was well under $1K - probably closer to $700.)

If he wasn't focused on the "mission timer" style countdown bezel I would just tell him to buy the Mido Ocean Star GMT Auto and be done. It is on sale at Joma right now for $890.

44mm is about the max size for my skinny-ass wrist, but at 6'6, your boy could pull it off no problem.

If he is doing what my buddy was doing in the Air Force (bouncing around AsiaPac while documenting everything in Zulu time), having the "jump hour" capability of the Certina / Alpina / Mido will come in very handy.

If he is stationary and just documenting reports coming in from all over, then a 2893-2 based movement is probably fine.

I'm kinda curious how the Seiko GMT movement operates. Is it a "jump hour" type as found in Rolex, Mido, etc., or is it "jump GMT hand" such as found in the ETA 2893-2?

The seiko SSK00x series (4R34movement) is a jump GMT hand or “caller” gmt as far as I’ve read.

Here’s another option that doesn’t exactly fit his needs, but still a cool watch (IMO).
F6B465C6-F2C9-4E46-9A08-ED31F2C80CA9.jpeg
This Certina is 200m water resistant, comes with a nice bracelet, and well under $1k (significantly under if you can find it from Joma or Ashford).

Interesting thing on this one is the crown second position allows for the hour hand to be rotated in either direction, so flying East or West across time zones is a quick adjustment.

The bad news is there is no quick set date advance, so you have to advance the hour hand twice around the dial to advance the date (again, only the hour hand moves, so the minute and GMT hand stay in position and accurate).

I haven’t worn either the Alpina or this Certina in a bit and just noticed this difference. On the Alpina GMT movement, when the crown is in the second position, it advances the hour hand forward or the date forward. You cannot rotate the hour hand backwards.

Kind of academically interesting that two watches from the same Swatch family of brands, in approximately the same tier within that family, and with similar functions, would use different movement designs.

As for the count down function, tell your boy to use a grease pencil on the watch glass like I did when I was too poor to buy a “real” dive watch as a kid getting certified in the early 90’s or to just use his cell phone like the rest of the millennials

After thinking about this for far too long, I think you hit the nail on the head with your original post.

I would go for this:

and this:

Watchshopping has the Hamilton on sale for $758, so combined total still well under $1K.

Lol the flashlight

Yeah, I’ve owned a few hammy’s and they had great lume - apparently this one is really sad. The watch does exactly what he wants, though…

Love the grease pencil remark as well - we use grease pencils for EVERYTHING :gayumbrella:

Wel,l while I was working a deal with Todd for his Ares GMT, which I’m now wearing (thanks again T!!) my son decided to go out and pick this one up

It’s exactly what he wanted, although the lume is subpar.

I didn’t have the heart to tell him about the Ares - which was intended to be a Christmas present. So now I get to sport that bad boy lol

Wow! Funny how that worked out. Good for both of you. I had a Hamilton Khaki Aviator GMT. It had a really cool triple crown and an under the glass bezel complication, super sharp looking - but the lume was also subpar. I bet you’re gonna love the Ares. They are beasts.
