Show your Wabi Watch(es)
Well, those who know me, know I like watches that have been worn and loved. These are watches that do not have hairlines or flea bites, rather, watches used and enjoyed for their intended purpose. Watches that show a life well lived. That’s not to say they were intentionally abused, rather worn and received the “knocks” of being on a wrist. In the day, a true daily wear watch. The thing most important for me; mechanically sound, original and non-polished. Other than that, the wear and tear is the frosting on the cake.
I have owned many pristine new watches and pristine vintage watches…the latter considered; Safe Queens, Drawer Queens…collector quality. I realized, like fine wine, the inherit notes of a watch, reflected my taste. So imperfections, actually helped me to worries less about putting the first ding on it. It was liberating for me.
I never considered any watch as a “beater” as this would be in the eye of the beholder. Having owned watches under $100.00 to over $15k (in terms of present day values) I enjoyed and appreciated each for their “inner and outer” beauty
Show us your watch that reflects a life well lived. Here’s one of mine to start.

Good thread idea! I’ll have to post up some pics of my Orient Mako. Wish I still had my G-Shock Mudman that survived a car crash and had tons of “character” but the caseback was so fused on that I couldn’t get it open to change the battery, so I gave it a trash burial.

As bad as it sounds I don’t think I have any watches that have been put thru their paces……hmm…

Thanks, it was great fun while I had it.

Nice one Mike. Those GShocks are almost indestructible and so vertical. I am considering the newer module 5000 series.Wario406 wrote:

My favorite. It’s been worn the heck out of…but held up pretty well. Unpolished 1995.

My kind of thread! A majority of my "collection" is "scratchy old seikos"

Thanks Blaine - this one is +35 years old. First year of the Marlin and the G-Shock. It's got LOTS of stories and it also has been exposed to a few cuss words while remodeling houses.

Re: Show your Wabi Watch(es)
The Pulsar was my first real watch I got sometime in highschool. It’s probably Circa 1984 ish. I wore that watch 24/7. In fact, I never took it off. Slept, showered, swam, etc with this watch on. It was on my wrist throughout Basic Training in 1986. It went to Germany in 1989. Somewhere along the line I had the battery replaced at a PX and they didn’t seal it up good. It took some moisture in the shower, so I had to quit wearing it in the water. Every so often I’d replace the battery and one of my kids who is into watches would wear it. It still runs today. I did A LOT of wild stuff wearing that watch.
The Pro Diver our own DeepC gave me years ago. Lord only knows what that watch saw when he had it. I wore it as my main beater when I was on SWAT, and later sent it to Iraq with my youngest son when the boys deployed a year or so ago. I didn’t want him to wind up with a dead G Shock and nowhere to get a battery replaced. It’s back with me now, but the Eco Drive battery gave up the ghost. I’ll definitely send this one back to Citizen.

The Orient Mako I did keep. I also had an orange one at some point as well as the Orient “revolver” which I liked a lot. I looked up the Mako the other day to see the specs and noticed Orient is still selling it with an updated movement and bezel! Still selling at a heck of a bargain at $210

Both great watches. I have never seen that Pulsar variant before. Love the dial and faded insert.DMB wrote:The Pulsar was my first real watch I got sometime in highschool. The Mako is really an incredible value. A relative has the black dial and seeing it in person, rock solid.ezcheese wrote:The Orient Mako I did keep.
