Cape cod or polywatch to remove scrateches on Acrylic crystal?

Post by Abmw » Thu Mar 09, 2023 9:46 am

I've got some deeper scratches on two of my watches (Steinhart and Speedmaster) with acrylic crystal. Typically I use toothpaste to remove light scratches and that works great. Now I've got deeper scratches that toothpaste doesnt work on so what do you guys typically use. I have a Cape Cod cloth I bought years ago that I never used. I was about to use that but then it seems people use that more for the case/bracelet. Any recommendations?

Thanks

Polywatch works great. Cape cod is slimy and not as effective, in my experience.

So is Cape Cod less abrasive then? I was actually thinking Cape Cod might be be too abrasive for crystal face. If it isnt I may just try it since I have a one on hand already.

Thanks

Less abrasive. I’d expect that toothpaste is the most abrasive, then polywatch.

Yes. Cape cod is great for stainless. I never had good luck on the acrylic crystal.

Also, any auto parts store sells plastic polish for headlights. Works well

Thanks for the feedback guys. I ordered some Polywatch on Amazon since it was so cheap. I am gonna try both the Polywatch and Cape Cod just for fun.

Cape Cod is more of a chemical polishing product than an abrasive one. I've heard that Cape Cod can be detrimental to seals if it seeps into them, so I'd be very reluctant to use it on a crystal.
No, it's not Tourettes.

I spent days with Polywatch getting a scratch out of my old Tudor Day Date and had a lot of finger cramps from trying to get more pressure to remove the scratch. If you don’t make any headway early, I’d try the headlight polish or something similar.

I’ve used Flitz in the past with good results.

Hey Ab, like Roger said Polywatch might not get it. A quick and safe way is this 4-sided nail file/buffer. $3.99 on Amazon. Mask off the case to avoid scuffing it and start using 1, then 2...3 and finish with Poly or toothpaste. It only takes minutes. If you get to 3 and still see scuffs, do it again, it won't take much. You won't mess it up.

If the scratches are severe or affecting the visibility of the watch, it might be necessary to consult a professional watch repair service to assess if the crystal needs to be replaced.
