Update: 1680 running very / extremely fast?
I’ve read that a watch running super fast all of the sudden is usually magnetized - has anyone had any luck with a degausser tool from Amazon or something like that?
Or send it away to have it looked at? If that’s the case - any recommendations? Anyone know a guy?

I hear you should not use a vibrator regularly with a watch on your wrist. Just sayin. ;-)

If it is not magnetized the Amazon tool can magnetize it. A watch can run fast or slow when magnetized. If it was me I would us a phone app to check it for magnetization first.

Lepsi is the app i've used to detect magnetization.
FWIW, you can send it to me for closer examination if you need...

Do you have a compass? Hold it by the watch to see if the needle moves. This should help tell if it is magnetized.
I’ve always thought that magnetism causes the hairspring to stick together making the watch run fast (extremely fast in my limited experience - only magnetized one watch).
As an aside, I think he culprit for me was using an old hot air blowing hand dryer. I’m guessing they had some big ol’ magnets in the blower motor and I held my hands too close. I’ve heard laptop speakers can do it too, as can iPhone and iPad cases.

Spot on...just get a compass...anything beyond that I would send to a professional...it's not a cheap watchRyeguy wrote:Do you have a compass? Hold it by the watch to see if the needle moves. This should help tell if it is magnetized.

If you have a good local watchmaker, he can de-magnetize it. I have used my guy. He put it on a timer first, checks the timing and then de-magnetizes it and checks timing again. In total, takes a few minutes. I have had a few magnetized over the years.

Oh I forgot to mention, if it magnetized you can slid it over the anti-theft (gray pad) at Homedepot or a clothing store to fix it. I did this years ago on a watch. I do need to state some watches actually have to have the movement removed to demagnetize it. We had a Omega 2500 that needed this to make it work.

It is most likely magnetized. I have a custom Seiko Turtle I purchased preowned. When it arrived it was running +5 minutes in 12 hrs. I purchased one of those blue $10 demagnetizer off of ebay. It worked! The watch runs +6 sec per 24hrs now.

I've had a couple of magnetized watches. One was my black Hydronaut. I wore it on a 500 mile motorcycle ride and it was running crazy fast when I made it home.
Another was a NOS ladies Hamilton I picked up.
My watchmaker put them on his demagnitizer and both were perfectly fine and keeping correct time after.

Re: Update: 1680 running very / extremely fast?
Update:
1) thanks for all the suggestions
2) tested for magnetism via a compass and 2 separate iPhone apps
3) all 3 tests are negative so doesn’t appear to be magnetized
4) 50+ yr old watch probably needs (and deserves) a service
5) it’s all good - happy to take care of this beauty…..for the next owner, lol.

Have you tried banging on a table a few times?

Ha! Should probably try that on the Scurfa my son whacked with his baseball bat. A hit screwed it up, no reason another good whack couldn’t right it. Hell, that’s how you used to get the ol’ console TV working again .CGSshorty wrote:Have you tried banging on a table a few times?

Re: Update: 1680 running very / extremely fast?
There is another option which is if the balance spring for tangled which would make the spring shorter and the watch running faster. Some people had success running the watch all the way down, meaning let it unwind totally and then patting the case back... in same cases that disentagled it. That worked with a few people who had older Seiko watches but I don't know if this would be good for a Rolex. Since it is a heirloom or vintage anyway, I think a good service would be nice.
Check out Mark Sirianni Watch repair shop. They advertise being family operated and have good reviews.
