The regulars here likely know that my particular manifestation of our shared illness is an affinity for Chronosport UDTs. I have over the years managed to aquire a sample of every (Type II) variant that I have come across, (minus the obviously Franken examples). I have also accumulated a small handful of Type I's, two of which were actually fully functional for a while. These earliest versions, two button models commonly refered to as "Type I's", are next to impossible to find in fully functional condition. When found, the movement is unlikely to survive its next battery change for reasons that are frequently debated. Furthermore, "no one" will work on them as the ESA-900-231 modules are so prone to failure. At least that is what I was always led to believe. Turns out - that is not the case. Neil Rawson (aka rawsar.com) repairs/modifies the 900-231 into what he calls a H4 module with essentially the same functionality. Details here: https://rawsar.com/
I sent my small collection of Type I parts off to him and he repaired two modules and assembled two watches from the best parts in the batch:

As you can see from his website, you can expect to pay a few hundred dollars to have this done. (keep in mind the prices shown are AUD - we in the US will enjoy a very favorable exchange rate). Neil was very communicative and easy to work with and is clearly a master of his niche. He thoroughly tested the watches before invoicing. I am very pleased with the results. If you happen to have a watch with a 900-231 movement that is worth the cost to you, I highly recommend you check out his services. If I ever come across a Type I "Rambo" watch with the 'movie correct' Arabic numeral dial that is cosmetically acceptable, I'll by it and send it off to Neil asap! (hint, hint)
