Deep thoughts
Deep thoughts
So I had something of a weird epiphany this evening. We sold a Pontiac Sunfire for a song about 15 years ago. It was maybe 13 years old and had around 158,000 miles. Original clutch and transmission but had basically run trouble free the entire 13 years. Sold it because it was a third or fourth car and worth very little on paper. Any repair would have been greater than that. However tonight I'm thinking (I have no idea why) why did we sell the car. It would have probably run trouble free as a backup for another 5 years. Is this a sudden attack of practical? This is really strange.

Lay off the Devil's Lettuce Eric.

Re: Deep thoughts
The only vehicle I regret selling was my old Jeep Wrangler. It was my first "new" vehicle I ever purchased back in 1995 and was stone basic (straight 6, 5 speed manual transmission, leaf spring / solid axle suspension). I sold it because my job required a more "professional" vehicle and it wasn't a great commuter vehicle.
I loved that rig though. It was a great beach / weekend vehicle.
That said, I'm not certain I could hold a similar emotional attachment to a mid-'90's Pontiac Sunfire.
Paying insurance on a 13 year old vehicle with 158K miles that isn't used makes no sense, unless the car is destined to be a future classic.

I wouldn’t keep a Sunfire around as an extra car. It’s not a “fun” car plus you have maintenance, insurance, and plates. If you want an extra vehicle I recommend getting something that makes your heart beat like a sports car or a jeep.

I'm thinking there may be a couple things at play here. I miss driving stick is one. Another is now that our VW Newbeetle is running again I've realized that I prefer small cars.

Now that I realize you own and enjoy driving a VW new Beetle, I see that Dave was correct.... lay off the Devil's lettuce!

Short fat women also have a low central of gravity, but I don’t want to be caught inside one.

Did you buy something else in its place? If not I'm not sure there would be a loss. Then again I'm that guy that no longer likes owning cars out of warranty. I've had some real messes over the years, but I was also an idiot buying old British cars.
Re: Deep thoughts
Sort of. Bought a Mitsu Spyder, then an Acura RDX, then another RDX replaced the Spyder when larger car-seat didn't fit in the Spyder. Still have two RDX's and the VW (it's my wife's pet). College tuition is looming so replacing cars isn't in the picture right now. Just making do with what we have.

I can relate to the “comfort” of a spare vehicle. I had an old Chevy 97 truck with 73k miles and it was rarely used. Even though in great shape, I decided to sell as it ultimately didn’t make sense to pay license, insurance, and maintenance for something I didn’t use or need.

I hear you. My daily driver is nearing 19 years old, and is now over 203k miles. Finding a new car with a manual is tough, unless you’re willing to go with a performance sports coupe or overpriced Civic/Integra/Corolla.
I’m sticking with what I have until there is something major that needs to be addressed.
VW still has the Jetta GLI with manual, but dropped manual transmission in the GTI. That may be where I go next, unless I punt and go with a TLX.
