Glad you mentioned that. Thought I might be the only one. I hated that movie.JBZ wrote: Read and saw Fight Club. Hated both. Really hated.

Yeah - I know that both the movie and Chuck Palahniuk have huge followings. I just don't get it - not my thing.cdnwatchguy wrote:Glad you mentioned that. Thought I might be the only one. I hated that movie.JBZ wrote: Read and saw Fight Club. Hated both. Really hated.

Read a lot of Tom Clancy when I was a teenager. Re-reading it now it's a little painful how poorly edited it was.mechnut wrote:Not necessarily better, but just as good: The Hunt for Red October
Movie was a lot better.

Re: Movie better than the book.
I liked American Sniper more at the movies than I did the book. The book was a great read but I found the visual impact of the movie to be incredibly awesome.
I will say that I rarely find a movie to actually be better than the book.

Good idea for a thread, Moisty. I'm getting some ideas for reading - I've seen most o the movies.

Yeah-I just started reading "The Shining" -another top 10 movie of mine. It's pretty good so far.

In my experience books and resultant movies are mutually exclusive.

I'd muse aloud that many of the Marvel Universe movies (eg. Iron Man, and especially Thor) are a lot more fun than their dorky comic progenitors. I'd personally say the same of Craig's 2006 Casino Royale vs the ancient novel.
Re: Movie better than the book.
I agree with this. When I was in high school, I loved Clancy. A couple of years ago I picked up one of his books I had never read, and I couldn't believe how poorly edited, poorly researched, and hackneyed it was.FlyPenFly wrote:Read a lot of Tom Clancy when I was a teenager. His stories make much better movies.

Re: Movie better than the book.
I pick and choose Clancy. One of my favorite books is "Red Storm Rising" with "Hunt" a close second. Hunt was a great great movie and when I went back to read the book my memory inserted (some homo) Sean Connery as Ramius as well a few of the other dudes and it made the book even better.

Re: Movie better than the book.
Here's a tangent.
Better Jack Ryan, Alec Baldwin or Harrison Ford? I actually think Baldwin was better, especially since I didn't know who he was when THFRO came out. Harrison Ford was already famous when he got the roll, so all I could see was Indiana Jones playing Jack Ryan.

Candy
The book was better. Ringo sucked in the movie. Marlon Brando said it was the worst film he'd ever done.

Totally agree. Same reason Spielberg used the relatively unknown at the time Liam Neeson to play O Schindler. 3 people tried out for the roll-Warren Beatty, Kevin Costner, and Mel Gibson. Beatty actually had a script but Spielberg didn't want him over shadowing who Schindler was.

"Without Remorse" has always been my favorite Clancy, especially since I live near a large part of the story takes place.
