Re: 65' VW Bug project
Even after all new shifter bushings I still had a little notchiness when shifting. I just picked up a copper Hurst shifter that was only made from 69-71. I freaking love how smooth it is now.
It came with the bakelite black shifter ball and the original rosewood.

Re: 65' VW Bug project
We need some new tires on the ride. I wanted to stick with as close to stock as I could. I ordered some Nankang CX668 Low Noise tires from Discount Tire Direct. They were $50 a piece.
I have to say combined with an alignment it is rolling really good. I might need to lower the air pressure to get it riding a little smoother.
I will try and remember to do a longevity report on them.

Why?
If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry.

No. She has been driving my Saab some but she isn't comfortable enough to drive the Bug yet. She said she is working up to it.

the taillights are so low on the Bug that people tend to ride up on you since they are on their phone the whole time. with this third brake light installed it is at eye level.

Installed custom shifter knob from Martin Shapes (surfboard maker) for my kids bday. I also rebuilt the Hurst shifter and added a Race Plate from Bruce.

Re: 65' VW Bug project
Since I got the Bug on the road there was a few nagging issues I wanted to address.
I pulled the engine and transmission again. Resealed the trans, new OEM mounts, new flywheel and gasket.
On the engine I reinstalled the factory thermostat system. It was a pain in the ass since people removed them a long time ago and parts are not readily available.
Now I have the front beam out to refresh it. I have some rust converter on it now. I have rebuilt the steering box, and refurbished the gas tank.
When I install the front beam I will be installing disc brakes also.
A few pics.

Nice work T. You’ve got skills.
Re: 65' VW Bug project
Very cool T. Nice to see the Bug coming along. Can't recall if this will soon become your daughter's ride. If so, she's a lucky girl.
Re: 65' VW Bug project
No idea how old you’re daughter is - I have a 24 year old who has issues... wouldn’t wish that on anyone
Anyway, you’re project is SO cool!

Re: 65' VW Bug project
I just got this under the dash parcel tray from Foreign Concepts. Pretty decent for $59.
A while back I had a persistent flange leak on my transmission. Unfortunately it required me to drop the motor/trans out to fix it. I used these flange stiffeners to fix the issue.
At the same time I put a new flywheel in. The old one had some rough teeth on it. Now it turns over smoother.
I also added a front sway bar, rear axle camber bar, braided brake lines on every corner and disc brakes on the front. It handles like it is on rails now. And stops really good.
New headlight lens and bulbs.
The engine now with ethanol rate fuel lines and a rebuilt carburetor.

Re: 65' VW Bug project
You’ve got a lot of hours of blood sweat and tears into this bug. Can you get a restored vintage vehicle appraisal and insure it for what’s probably a very respectable resale value?

my wife wanted a car with airbags for our kid to learn in. luckily i found this beetle super cheap from a guys whose tractor I worked on last year. of course I have to do a little work to it but it will be a killer ride for her.
