Car conundrum for this mid life guy!

Post by Bradystraps » Thu Apr 28, 2022 9:59 am

So I think I've decided to invest in a newer car for my wife and get rid of my 335i xDrive mSport to free up some $$$. She has had a 2014 Santa Fe Sport for a while and really wants a more upscale midsize SUV. My car is getting up there in miles and will need some money invested if I were to keep for another couple of years so... probably a good time to cut bait. I plan on investing some money into my 986 and driving it a bit more to help me not miss my 335 too much!

I really like some of the hot hatches but most are out of my $20K price range for a preowned vehicle. Don't really like the look of the GTI's, unfortunately.
The Civic Si looks quite nice but... am I "too old" for that car? I'd prefer to find something with less than 50K miles on it, stick or automatic is fine, no preference. Looking for something reliable and somewhat fun to be in.

Suggestions?

Subaru WRX?

My wife had a Civic SI when I met her, and it was a fun car, but she always said she felt like she was sitting on the floor and was happy when the lease was up.

The new Civic SI is definitely more of a mature car than the old one. If you don't want a GTI or a Jetta GLI, it looks tough to beat!

The Si I am looking at is a 2018. I only want white as I feel it is a bit more mature than the other colors.

The WRX never wowwed me from a looks standpoint but I might consider. They are also a bit more expensive. The AWD is nice to have.

Buy what you like! Don't worry about how "mature" it is.

Have you considered a Kia Stinger?

Yes, but didn't think I could get one for $20K or less.

I've haven't researched it, but I'm guessing you could find a used one in good condition for that.

Get a certified pre-owned GTI (or GLI) and be done with it. Like a Civic, but more mature. MK7 GTI is peak GTI and they are actually very reliable.

I sold mine a few years ago to get a BMW Wagon so I could have more space and AWD... but the GTI was a lot more fun and surprisingly practical.

I agree that the new Civic looks great. Honda is finally returning to their roots wit simple designs. It might have one of the nicest interiors south of $50k. Won't find one for $20k though.

Mazda 3 current generation comes in Turbo AWD and is very nice. YOu should look at them.

THAT is a good looking GTI. Every one I see in the low $20K range has those awful wheels on them. Yes, I realize I can swap them out.
The Mazda Turbo AWD is $25K+. Great car though from what i have read.

Just had a bad experience with my daughter's Tuscon and it left a really bad taste in my mouth so Hyundai is out.
Comparing a 2015/16 GTI with the 2018 Si right now.

GTI seems like the sweet spot for this category of car to me.

I’d take that SI over a similar WRX without question. I say that as a person who owns a modern Subaru.

Traction is really down to tires. Good snows, and you're good to go.

Civic Si of any flavor is the easy button. The GTi/GLi call is a great idea as well, basically a FWD version of a BMW.

Too bad you dont like GTI’s because they rock… mines’s a 21’ and runs like a spanked money on the APR 1+ tune.
