Hamilton Khaki Navy GMT Review

by Wario406 » Sun Feb 27 2022

Purchase Decision: As a newish watch collector, I was looking to expand my inventory and specifically wanted something different and also wanted something that had an “under the glass” bezel. My small yet mighty current collection is mostly divers and I didn’t want something with big outsize bezel. Next, I wanted a reliable auto, something that wears nicely (balanced), and something that had a relatively simple face and interface. I like watches that strike a balance between simplicity and wearability. My last criteria was price. I wanted to stay under $750, preferably under $600 if possible. I had been looking at number of watches with an under the glass bezel such as the Orient 1965's Re-issue of “the King Diver”, and the Christopher Ward C65 Super Compressor (over budget!) when a friend suggested the Hamilton Khaki Navy GMT. He said he had owned a few and felt it exceed my requirements and he said the watches were an exceptional value. Within a couple of days, he found my watch at Toppers and I purchased it. The purchase experience was excellent and I was extra pleased to get an additional 10% off because of Presidents Day! The included documentation shows that the watch was originally purchased from Toppers in June of 2013, and here it was being sold by the second time by them almost 9 years later - and, to make things even better - Toppers added an additional 1 year warranty.

In the Box:
The Hamilton Khaki Navy GMT came in what appears to be its original box with it’s original papers. The box shows minor signs of wear but all in all is VERY nice for an almost 9 year old watch/box. The watch itself is in incredible condition. No signs of wear or abuse. I feel the watch and bracelet firmly fall into the category of “very gently used”. And, neither the watch nor the bracelet show any signs of polishing. It appears that the watch may be an original safe queen survivor. Also include in the sale is a very nice Barton fitted soft rubber strap that looks fantastic on the watch.

On the Wrist:
I find the Hamilton Khaki Navy GMT to be one of the nicest wearing watches I own. The shape of he watch and the combination of thin (11mm) and modest case width (42mm) makes the watch sit very low and tight to my wrist (7.75”). I feel that it fits very much like my Seiko SKX’s in overall balance and presence on the wrist. In addition to the balance the watch is very easy to read and and mostly easy to operate. The white on black face and bezel lettering is sharp and clear, the only thing that is hard to read is the lettering of the cities on the outer GMT ring. It is VERY DIFFICULT to read the city names on this ring through the exposed window because of the super fine black on gray lettering - but, the “T2” gauge just inboard is very crisp with black on white lettering. The inner bezel is also easy to read as is the rest of the watch through the beautiful domed sapphire crystal that has almost zero distortion even on extreme angles. The case construction is top notch and the finish on all the steel is extremely nice. The see-though back is very nice and the movement that pulses at 8bps is attractive and a joy to observe. The bracelet has solid lugs and and solid attachments at the watch. The latch is also machined steel with an expandable link to get over a dive suit.
Operation of the watch is fairly straight forward with the exception that the GMT functions/display can be somewhat confusing. The Navy GMT has three screw down crowns. The crowns do not feel as solid as some of the other watches I own, but none the less they all function as advertised. I have seen some complaints that the threads wear out on the crowns over time, but I have no reason to believe at this point that I’ll have any issues. The first click on the top right crown serves to set the date/GMT, and the second click hacks the second hand and sets the time. If I had any initial complaint of the movement it would be that it’s somewhat hard to easily find the detents on the upper right crown. But once found, the setting the time/GMT/Date is simple. The lower right crown spins the inner bezel in either direction. Spinning the lower right crown/bezel also moves the window for the GMT city - although highlighting any of the cities in the window is just for show as the actual GMT function is tied to the upper right crown and the “T2” indicator on the display. The left crown operates to spin the GMT cities dial that is viewed through the window on the bezel but spinning the dial also DOES NOT change the GMT function or the time displayed as those are tied to the T2 window. Although the lower right and left crowns seem confusing - I find their functions to be minimal and not relevant with the exception that the lower right controls the inner bezel to set a timer. I highly doubt that I’ll every use the left crown going forward. Once set, the watch runs very smoothly. Illumination is very good considering that it’s a 9 year old watch. I wouldn’t call it spectacular, but it is very good. The bracelet is smooth and well finished like the rest of watch. The braclet adjusts easily with pins to remove links and it has no sharp edges. In conclusion - this watch is well built, easy to read and is VERY VERY COMFORTABLE to wear!!!

Summary:
I find the Hamilton Khaki Navy GMT Automatic 42mm part number H77615133 to be a unique and very easy to wear watch. It’s very attractive on the wrist, very balanced, and very easy to read. Im am overall extremely happy with this purchase and look forward to lots of wrist time with this piece. For all its pluses - it has literally no drawbacks with the exception of the funky GMT city views. I would recommend this watch to anyone looking for something different and sharp that crosses the diver<—>field watch<—>pilot categories. It’s a casual watch that can easily slip under a cuff to become more formal. And… as I mentioned it’s unique and incredibly comfortable to wear.

At the time, the production of consumer watches was halted and the entire lot they had at the time, over one million Hamilton watches, were shipped to the troops overseas. The watch which was waterproof to 500 meters, faithfully served the divers, something that further boosted Certina’s standing on the horological and diving map.
