Right out of the gate.....New Sub $20,000!

Post by rockmastermike » Wed Sep 09, 2020 6:18 am

we have now reached a point where a "standard" SS Sub is 20K

don't get me wrong, I love the new Sub and would jump at it at retail like everyone else

Can't wait to see what the Green or Blue list at on the open market

Ridiculous, but as the old saying goes, if someone is willing to pay it...

I’m sure these will eventually be 1.5/2k over retail in a year or so I would imagine. At least I hope so

Asking price. If someone actually pays that they need their head examined. That's AP territory.

I don't even know anymore. I see the "old" maxi case Sub date listed by grey dealers at $4,000 to $5,000 over MSRP for BNIB. And the pre-owned ones in good condition aren't that much cheaper.

This is the very first. No way it is representational of what the eventual grey price will be.

Bigger question is that with all of Rolex's paranoia about their watches being flipped, how the hell did they let the very first one go to a flipper, with a warranty card???

Agreed. Rolex has a truly messed up distribution chain. Frankly, it undermines the desirability of the brand for me.

Meh. I’m not mad, I’ll stand in line with AD as long as it takes. It’s not like I don’t have a watch. If the ugly 5711 that retails for $29K is routinely offered for $70K, I’m not surprised the first Cermit on the block is being sold for that. Prices will come down I’m sure.

If it didn’t have plastic on the clasp it would probably be $27k.

Buy what you like, but I could do a lot better watch-wise for that kind of money.

I guess I should clarify that I am not mad either. "Meh" is the appropriate term, actually.

By messed up distribution chain I mean I find it a bit ironic the most likely to be prioritized buyer (and the guy likely ahead of all of us in the queue for purchase) isn't some enthusiast collector but rather someone who intends to flip the watch for a profit. I wouldn't be in the least surprised if the salesperson got a nice little kick back as well (so they are essentially profiting twice on the sale of the watch).

I'm not really certain how Rolex can fix this other than to require some kind of watch / buyer registration at the point of sale (with the registered owner being the only person authorized for RSC service).

Ultimately, I think Rolex doesn't really care. They are selling all the watches they can make. They are achieving their target profit margins with no discounts necessary. What do Rolex care if someone is willing to pay 2X MSRP on the secondary market?

Yep agreed
Rolex doesn’t care. ADs should and they don’t. Some dbag who bought a lot of jewelry (that’s actually what gets you up the list, not watches) and for that got a call first and contacted David right away to resell. Happens all the time. Why wouldn’t he take the trade offer.

I wouldn't be surprised if that LV slipped out the back door to DSW either. He must have relationships with AD's for them to unload the less desirable models. Who knows how they finagle the names on the cards if that is the case.

Edit: Actually, when I bought a NIB Rolex from him a few years ago (god damn I wish I still had that 116600), my name was on the card.

Yep those days are over, when you had blank card and all plastic intact. I’m surprised he actually had some plastic left on the bracelet. Someone really broke all the new rules set by Rolex last year. My guess it’s Italian or Canadian, not US AD.

I’m fairly certain mine will go out the door with plastics intact. Not sure if I’ll be able to get the warranty card left blank, but I’ll try.

Then your AD will be violating Rolex policy and contribute to the mess everyone is complaining about. Unless you’re actually keeping the watch I guess

So is that the new protocol from Rolex. You purchase directly from ADs and they remove the plastics to make sure you don’t resell, BNIB?

I’m sure it all hinges on just how good your relationship is with the AD/salesman.
