First Sub for me…

Post by Wario406 » Wed Aug 16, 2023 5:19 pm

Ok folks, you gave me great advice while ago on what SMP to buy, now I’m hoping you’ll share advice on my first Rolex Sub.

As you may know, I’m in process of a substantial sell off to find my sub and all in I should be raising about $8.5k. I can stretch a little higher if need be.

I’m thinking of a 5 digit 14060 no date, but am wonder about others.

Also, any recommendations on where to buy?

Thanks in advance! You guys are so awesome!!!

If you do 14060 go with the two liner.
I have a sd 16600 and the I’d prefer a simpler dial. The wall of text can get distracting at times.

I recommend a female, but you’ll hear arguments for a dude from some folks here. Either way, like is often the case on DWC, the straps make the difference.

Also, consider a good gimp mask.

Edit: take the time to choose well, your first sub is a memorable acquisition.

Oh, if we’re talking watches I’d also say 14060. Look for one that isn’t over polished, but I doubt there is much selection at $8500. If you have cash and time, it could work out.

I’d also suggest you consider the now discontinued 39mm Explorer 1 (model 214270). It has a lovely satin-matte dial, excellent bracelet with Easy link extension, and it’s just plain cool. Black dial divers are plentiful.

I’d agree on the two liner.

I’d go 14060 two liner as well or the new 124060 or if you can stretch the budget
I also think a nice 16570 is an awesome first Rolex.

I’m with Ed on the 214270 (MK2 dial). Add the Tudor Ranger to the sell off list to fund it, though the 39mm Explorers may actually be underpriced right now.

Two liner Sub would be ideal, but you’re talking about a used Rolex anywhere from 12-20+ years old and that market is a minefield unless you really know what you are doing (I do not).

First Sub for me…

Post by Wario406 » Wed Aug 16, 2023 6:57 pm

Daymn. Great input and advice all around. I thought about a 39 explorer too. And, is a Rolex 39 $6k more watch than a Ranger? Im truly asking for input. I went into this selling off stock to buy a Sub… not your fault - mine - but, I feel like that’s where I’d like to be. I love my Ranger and it’s more than good enough - but, now I have no SMP - so, I’d really like a diver. I’m inclined to roll the dice on a two line - worst case is I can have it refirb’d. At my age, I dont think/hope that I’ll need to do that more than once before it’s someone else’s problem.

I’d love a 124060 but everyone is asking bank for them :-(

Agreed on prices will come down as interest rates continue to rise.

Another point to consider is even if you find one that needs TLC, the Dallas (not NYC) Service Center rocks and you’ll get a brand new looking watch back with a 2 year warranty.

Interesting fact: while James Bond wore a Sub, Ian Fleming actually wore an Explorer.

Not that it’ll change my ratio, but bond got laid a lot more than Fleming…

Well, Bond is fictional so I’m thinking it’s the other way around.

If you’re looking for a sub, get a sub!
I think your instincts are correct - 14060 is THE sub imo.
I would go for a late four liner because they’re younger.

Aesthetically, I also loved the 5 digit SD but it wore like shit on my 6.75 wrists: it’s too tall and it flops on the wrist too much.

In terms of where to buy, I had heard good things about hqmilton, but I know one of their OGs (the most respected guy) spun off and founded tropicalwatch.

Agree with this. Never bought from either but if I was going to get a “vintage” watch these would be the first place I’d look. They have a great rep and seem to be very honest in their descriptions in regards to condition/polishing.

Can't go wrong with TropicalWatch or HQMilton. Watch their sites and take your time.

I’m heading into NYC this weekend. I’ll look around at the usual suspects and see what they have in stock and where they’re at price wise. If there’s something good I’ll pass along the contact info

My first Sub was a 2-liner no-date 14060M, so it's definitely a special watch to me.

That said, if you've been accustomed to the quality of modern watches for awhile, many aspects of it will be underwhelming (the bracelet especially).

Unless there is a romantic sense of nostalgia you're chasing about the older Subs, I'd echo the nudges to go modern. Maybe an Explorer, but really just pushing a tad (liquidate a little more) for 214060 is probably the right call.

Is it possible to put a glide-lock on an older bracelet like a 14060M?

I've seen it done, it's getting one that's a bigger problem.

Yes, it absolutely fits, but good luck finding a Glidelock clasp. If you do find one, expect to pay $1600-2200.
