Even the best of us need to beware

Post by demer03 » Tue Mar 02, 2021 11:39 am

The last Sharkhunter I bought and have been enjoying was being sacrificed for the Tgraph. A buddy who was considering buying it called into question the number “3” on the 300T. In the last 24 hours I’ve learned there are reproduction Sharkhunter dials in circulation and I have one. It’s very good, but on side by side there is no doubt.

I even had it sold and had to back out given this revelation.

Be careful boys n girls. It’s too easy today.

Holy crap, I just ran upstairs to check the Doxas for the flat T. Fortunately all is well.
Thanks for the heads up. There must be a lot of nervous Doxa fans who are waiting to check.

It doesn't use numbers or moving hands
It always just says now

That sucks. I hope the watch is still worth something even with the repro dial.

I'm at the point where I'll take a pass on vintage. Just too many landmines out there, and too many less than scrupulous folks willing to take advantage.

I bought it from a collector friend and they are taking it back. They missed it too, but he has the parts to correct the problem. Whew.

That's good to hear. I can see stuff like this getting passed through several innocent buyers before anyone realizes that there's something wrong.

That’s nice you were able to unwind the deal.

I wonder if Doxa had service dials back then? It is not unheard of.

Who knows. With DOXA’s lack of records from that time we will never know. After the fake black lung dial from last week on eBay and an exposed thread on that well known rep forum, my money is on rep dial.

the reason why i say that is the 3rd one you posted matches the 2nd one almost identically but the 3 does not. the 1st none of the wording or letters match.

what ebay black lung are you talking about?

the lack of records is also what makes rolex vintage so wishy-washy for me. you have to rely on the hive mind to tell you if it is legit or not. :crybaby:

Last week a guy listed a black lung for sale on eBay. Turns out there was a whole thread on that rep forum about the making of a dial for that watch. It was the exact same one. The guy was trying to sell it as a black lung, when it was a run-of-the-mill T that had a fake dial in it. A friend of mine ended up buying it not knowing what he was doing. Paid $3800 for it… Thankfully he was able to undo the deal through PayPal.

And with your comment on Rolex, spot on. I remember being told I had a fake dial in my 5513. The guy bought it from here locally worked at Rolex in Switzerland and Dallas. He would always laugh saying these Internet experts have no idea about the parts that were put into these watches back in the 60s and 70s. Nothing was wasted. People have no clue about how it really worked.

Question: Is the only difference between what I'll call a base level T (since I don't know the Doxa lingo) versus the Black Lung version only the dial difference?

Oh, no. Apples and oranges. Black lung is in a No T thin case, domed plexiglass crystal, blacked out second hand, and each black lung “should “ be hand numbered on the back lug to name a few. This was done at US Divers when received from Switzerland.

My buddy thought he’d put the dial guts in a
No T case and make a killing. He learned a lesson.

Aha, thanks for the explanation. I figured there had to be more than just a different dial for the Black lung version.

The fake dials he made in that thread had a different 3 than the one you posted. Hell the ones he made look great imo. I really hate to say that though.

They don't have any idea. Their freaking hive mind or fake internet knowledge can make or break a watch sell. That shit is dangerous. I have had way too many customers try to say "I read online". GTFOH with that nonsense. :nutkick:

They are getting better and better. The black lung logo wasn’t quite right, but to the untrained eye....

Some people will lose some money out there.

even the word Doxa looks off on the one you just bought. i bet there have been some redials done along the way as a necessity due to a damaged watch and no parts being available. if you have ever dealt with kirk's redial they do some weird ass work.

i need to follow this up. kirk's dial fixed a seiko dial for me. it took 6 months for it to get it done, and they never returned a phone call or email. it shows up with the "swiss made" label on the bottom of the dial. true story. i was livid to say the least.
