A Sinn you don't see everyday
TL;DR - cool Sinn cockpit clock that will go only desk when we return to the office
Sinn NaBo 17 ZM from RAF Tornado ZA469
NaBo - NaBo stands for Navigation Borduhr, or on-board navigation clock.
ZM - Zentralminute - central minute counter
It has a bidirectional bezel. 3H Tritium dial & hands. The large black knurled crown at 6 o'clock winds up the movement with start/stop and reset buttons
Tornado Cockpit showing the NaBo 17ZM at the pilot's right
There are a few really cool things about his particular one:
1) Provenance - most cockpit clocks are pulled from generic aircraft however this one comes from a specific RAF Tornado plane Number ZA469
2) Accompanying paperwork/documentation (see below)
3) ZA469 flew combat IDS missions (interdiction/strike) against ISIS in Afghanistan
4) ZA469 is now on display at the Imperial War Museum Duxford (not rotting in a scrapyard)
An IWM spokeswoman said: "The Tornado GR4 is the most significant combat jet used by the Royal Air Force during the last 27 years and continues in service until 2019.
"The aircraft we've got – ZA 469 – was deployed to Afghanistan between 2011 and 2014, frequently operating in support of ground forces."

according to the documentation this from RAF Squadron 9 - Wiki page on Squadron 9: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._9_Squadron_RAF
Story goes that this clock eventually ran into problems - not unusual being banged around in a cockpit - and instead of being serviced it was simply replaced (again not unusual) with another one. It was sold as military surplus and eventually found its way to me.
I believe it runs a Valjoux 55 and will probably need to be properly serviced - Mike/RiverRat ?!?

Nice one, now you need a nice strap and you will be all set...
Just kidding, but you are right, we don't see these often. It looks awesome and suggests stories and adventures... no idea how you found it but I am really glad you did and now you have it.
Does it have a place to wind it? I mean a slot for a key or some knob? I assume it's manual if it has 55 jewels...

Great find!
@Erik - I don’t know if you noticed, but we’d get a few of those visiting Pease every once in a while years ago. I don’t know if I have any pics, but my buddy in the ANG would let me know when they were around.
Kind of amazing to think a modern (relatively) military fighting aircraft would have a mechanical gauge in its cluster, but also kind of cool too. Micro mechanics live on in our age of high speed computers.

The knurled crown between the "0" and "S" pushers is the winder and pull it for time settingCarloDWC wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 6:33 pmNice one, now you need a nice strap and you will be all set...

Re: A Sinn you don't see everyday
I think it used as purely back up equipment - but still needs to be wound/running for the aircraft to be fully mission capable (FMC)Ryeguy wrote: ↑Sat May 16, 2020 5:03 amGreat find!

Re: A Sinn you don't see everyday
20 turns of the crown gets me about 12 hours......how many rotations does this require to be fully wound?
Which leads to my next question...Anyone in the States service these?
