Is the 111 the best bet among <cough> the entry level PAMs?
If one wanted to test the waters with this brand, it seems like the PAM111 would be a good place to start. Any reason why this might not be the case? Do they hold value better than, say, the 005 or 104?

Nothing wrong with any of those choices. You have two decisions to make now; 1. auto or manual. If the answer is auto go 104. If the answer is manual go to decision 2. Sandwich or sausage dial. If sandwich is the answer go 111, sausage go 005. No wrong answer here.

Depends what you want. 111 or 112 have the sandwich dial. 000 and 005 have painted (sausage) dial and logo.mattjmcd wrote:If one wanted to test the waters with this brand, it seems like the PAM111 would be a good place to start. My personal fav is the zero cuz I like the logo base model - closer to the roots.

Love the 111 and sandwich dial
do it
You could also go 177 if you prefer brushed Ti to polished SS.

Is a seconds hand important?

Chris, what can you say about the movements of those models? Both HW and auto? ETA based? In-house?

000, 005, 111, 112 are all ETA based. All great watches, just depends on what you are looking for. My first PAM was the 111 because I wanted the sandwich dial and hand-wind movement. There's no wrong choice here, however, just personal preference.
Re: Is the 111 the best bet among <cough> the entry level PA
All the "affordable" stuff is ETA based. It is a huge jump in price to get into something in-house.marchone wrote:Chris, what can you say about the movements of those models? Both HW and auto? ETA based? In-house?

I'd find it hard to go for anything but the 000 in that range, personally.

I love the 000 but the 177, 176 then 111 are my faves. The Ti models rock.

Thanks, guys. It looks like time to do a little research and educate myself.

Agreed, if I was lucky enough to add another Panerai to the 00024 it would be a 176/177. Ti instead of stainless, sandwich dial to the sausage and a hand cranker compared to the automatic... It would cover about everything I would want out of two ETA based PAMS....Jeep99dad wrote:I love the 000 but the 177, 176 then 111 are my faves. The Ti models rock.

000 FTW

Full on egg head corporate job and I fly quite a bit so I'm really looking forward to adding to my collection of TSA friendly self defense tools. I have amcouple tactical pens, but I want to up the game and get into some custom stuff. Been watch obsessed for a while but this seems more fun.
Thanks for letting me play! "

I've owned both a 111 (my first Pam) and a 000 (which I DLC'd like a dumbass) - the 000 was the hands down winner to me.

I jumped into Pam with a 312 as for me it was important to have sandwich dial, 1950 case, second hand, date and in house movement. That's the thing with panerai, you just think what features are important to you, and there's a model to scratch the itch.
Re: Is the 111 the best bet among <cough> the entry level PA
Except automatic Panerai is like automatic Porsche 911...ericf4 wrote:I jumped into Pam with a 312 as for me it was important to have sandwich dial, 1950 case, second hand, date and in house movement. Just kidding I like 312 for all of features you've described above

I don't get the love for manual watches. I understand the feeling of winding etc, but autos do that too. Its not like an auto watch is a quartz etc...seriously....i just don't get why many paneristi feel that way. I own two and frankly wouldn't buy a manual...im the outsider on that I think.
Re: Is the 111 the best bet among <cough> the entry level PA
They feel that way because that is the essence of the brand. They are simple manual wind dive tools. All the stuff on the new in-house autos is for the new customer that really wants a Panerai, just not a real Panerai.ericf4 wrote:I don't get the love for manual watches. The day I become annoyed by winding my Speedy Pro is the day I stop wearing watches.

All that new stuff is for cross shopping with Rolex and other watches.
Date- check
auto - check
In house - check
GMT hand for those that can't add and subtract +-3 flying from LA to NYC - check
Bracelet option - check
Etc... nothing wrong with that really
