Straps for the Pelagos FXD

Post by mattcantwin » Thu Apr 18, 2024 2:30 pm

I knew prior to purchase that I would need to buy straps for the FXD.

I started with 5 straps from Amazon.

While waiting for the FXD to arrive, I worked my way through the FXD thread on WUS for strap ideas.

Many good options, but I was drawn to canvas straps from Diaboliq Straps.

I've never ordered from Joe before, but have long been aware of his work.

I reached out to Joe via FB.

Ordered these three leather backed canvas straps:

Blue (without the red stitching).

Admiralty Gray.

And the strap on right in picture below; stitching without decoration.

I'm trying out something different.

Working through the FXD Pelagos thread on WUS, I saw several pictures with two piece straps.

I was curious how I'd like that and reached out to a strap maker on ETSY I've purchased from in the past; TunsLeather.

https://www.etsy.com/shop/TunsLeather?

I asked if he makes two piece straps for fixed lug watches and he sent me these pictures.

Essentially the strap has two metal tabs that push through a thin piece of leather that passes over the lugs.

Then the tabs are pressed flat to hold the strap in place.

I'm well aware the two piece strap defeats the security afforded by a one piece strap/fixed lug combo.

In any case, I decided to give it a go and ordered two straps with this design.

Put the blue strap on first.

Looks like it is an issue in picture below, but so far I can't feel the tabs; hope that doesn't change.

You could always round those corners off if they irritate. Also noticed the leather is cut nearer the metal tabs in his photos compared to yours so maybe a couple of millimetres off there could help. Looks nice though.

I have to agree with Sir Hops-along on this one.

I'm also not much of a leather / canvas on diver guy either, but I know I'm probably the minority on this point.

Has anyone tried one of those BC rubber NATO's on an FXD?

Wet NATO's can be irritating and the BC rubber options look interesting. I'm kinda curious on how that would look.
