Old and new!

Post by Wario406 » Mon Oct 17, 2022 5:34 pm

Grandpa (left) and Grandson. Grandpa is ~35 year old Casio Marlin DW-200. I got that watch when I first met my wife. It survived many home remodels, sailing out of LA harbor, and a LOT of abuses. Still runs great even though it’s missing some blocks on the seconds display. The DW is an official survivor, I think it was the cheaper alternative to the original G-Shock as I believe it’s dated around 1983 - about when the G-Shock got launched. The grandson is a newish GW M5610 with the reverse display mod. The resemblance and function are very very similar. You G-Shock experts probably know the histories better than me, but I still think it’s cool too look at the lineage and appreciate the workhorse capabilities these things have.

35 years and it’s still kicking? Wow, that’s a nice run. I’m pretty young (19) so the longest time I owned a functioning watch is 3 years with my G-Shock GW-M500A (I’m planning to get it retired though because it’s hard to find compatible NATO straps for it since the resin band on my G-Shock is a bit too uncomfortable for me). Here’s hoping all of my (still functioning) watches last that long.

Hmm, I wonder if anyone had a Casio watch longer than you. Someone in Quora mentioned he owned his Rolex for 40 years and someone else said a guy who wanted to sold his Rolex told him he owned his watch for about 45-46 years, WITHOUT GETTING IT SERVICED AT ALL!
