Dammit Apple....

Post by Torrid » Thu Jun 27, 2019 12:59 pm

iPhones just aren’t as solid as they used to be. I miss my 5, 5s, and SE. I’ve never scratched or broken one of those. My iPhone 8 got a deep scratch in the screen. My 8 Plus has light scratches on the screen, but barely noticeable. The problem is the back glass is now cracked. I know Apple did glass backs for wireless charging which I use constantly, but it seems to be so fragile. Anyone else had this issue? I rarely use cases but this one is now going in a case to hide the damage. If it’ll crack this easily, then why not just stick to the super hard non scratching glass from before?

For that matter this may be my last iPhone and I’m fully immersed in iOS with devices. They’re more expensive and more fragile than ever before. I refuse to have a phone with a notch so the XS is out.

My Pixel 2 hasn't fared much better so it may not just be Apple.

I have a long, deep scratch on the screen that appeared seemingly out of nowhere, the rear camera lens is scuffed which grossly affects picture quality, and the corners of the case are pretty banged up. I don't recall any of my previous Apple or Samsung phones looking this bad after less than two years.

It seems that with all things, quality decreases and price increases.

This said; while I don’t like the case + screen protector thing, it keeps my phone from getting FUBAR.

No surprised. There aren’t too many factories capable of making these things. They’re all made by the same people.

Tempered glass and a case are a must for all of the new fangled phones.

My 7+ takes a beating at work. I’m impressed at how little damage it shows after more than two years of hard use.

I have otter box cases on both the phones I have to carry 24/7 and they have taken some pretty severe beatings. No issues so far..

I use a skin on my phone. Then a super thin case. Usually a TPU case.

Life Proof for me. Keeps it safe the abuse I subject it to and waterproof to boot. Never had any damage to a phone when protected by a life proof case but, they are bulky and cumbersome.

No case or screen protector for me, but I upgrade my phone every year, so the minor scratches over that period of time are worth the ability to experience the true form factor of the phone.

I think I wrote about this last year here. Yeah, with the way these phones are made, you have to have cases and screen protectors. The glass on the screen is raised more than it used to be on the older models, and having glass backs, well, glass is glass and it will crack unfortunately .

I also believe some units are just defective. My first XR I got last year, got a scratch on the screen within one week of using it. It wasn’t dropped, wasn’t put on a surface that would scratch it etc, just in and out of the pocket.

I got Sprint to send me another, and I put a screen protector on it. Went through 2 glass screen protectors from drops (they did protect the phone as intended) but have been screen protector free now for about a month because I don’t feel like putting another one on (I hate putting them on, aggravating to me). Have not got a scratch on the screen at all, so maybe the first one was just defective.

The reality is, the keep making all these great features in these phones, but keep making them more fragile.

They could make titanium bodies with better glass for the screens and no, they do not need to have glass backs for wireless charging, they could use good plastic or carbon fiber backs etc, but chose to make the phone more fragile all around.

Hi all,

I've had my Pixel 2 since December 2017 and put it in a Spigen case from day one and it is still unmarked and as new today, I have never used glass screen protectors as Gorilla glass is more than tough enough for how I treat my device. Also IMO the days of needing to upgrade our devices every year or less are way behind most of us and for me for sure. Our devices are now so powerful that the upgrades really make such a small amount of improvement to real life use to make it needed well at least for me it doesn't. Plus the absurd cost of our devices now are making using them for longer makes more sense. I am no longer caught in an endless upgrade race and now buy my device outright and pay far less monthly by using a Sim only deal over the course of a few years the price difference is much larger than one would think as opposed to getting a virtually free phone that costs you more in the long run I save roughly a third of the cost over 2 years and the longer you own it the savings get even bigger.

Stop thinking of it as a phone.
It’s not a phone. It’s a small computer, a communication device, a camera, a personal organizer, a music/media player and more all in one.
These devices can start cars with an app, can play music, share things with anyone in an instant, take really good photos, make calls, turn on lights in your house, control your TV, watch movies, cast movies and clips to your Tv, ETC. In 2000 they were a phone. They haven’t been a phone in a very long time.

Agreed. And the whole financing a phone thing is bizarre to me.

Yeah I’ll be using cases from now on. Luckily the case I picked up hides any damage, but I’ll be buying a case to use from the start with my next phone.

I have Verizon as well. With three lines unlimited on my account it’s definitely not cheap, but works excellently.

Case on. Looks brand new again now that I can’t see the damage.

How’s everyone like their XS? I bought the 8 Plus as a replacement for both my last iPhone and iPad. Bought another iPad Pro awhile back so a huge phone isn’t such a priority and this phone barely fits my pocket in a slim case. If I remember properly the Max is the same footprint as the 8 Plus with the XS being decently smaller and I’ve made peace with the fact that I’m now relegated to using cases.

Is the XS, or XR, the more expensive? I can’t keep them straight.
