Cold weather = FLEECE!
Re: Cold weather = FLEECE!
I am a huge fan of Patagonia, specifically their R series fleeces (wearing one as I type this). Their quality is excellent, customer service is really good, and pricing is not crazy like some of the more bougie / boutique outdoor brands (I'm looking at you dead bird...)
That being said, the modern synthetic down jackets are shockingly lightweight compared to fleece, and several levels warmer. Check out the Nano Puff while you're shopping.

Re: Cold weather = FLEECE!
I forgot about the Patagonia Retro-X jacket. I believe it is their highest pile fleece.

I remember that bagpiper deal! Glad you were able to grab itDoctorC wrote: ↑Tue Oct 18, 2022 8:53 pmMine says made in USA as well.hidden by leaves wrote: ↑Tue Oct 18, 2022 7:55 pmNot sure. I bought mine in 2019 and it says "made in USA" right on the label... In any case mine is extremely well made, it still looks new. From what I've seen TAD likes to do what they can in the US, which comes at a cost (along with the quality).
The only issue I've had (and I've worn it a lot) is the palm pad is made of fleece and is wearing a hole through it.
Also, the side pockets (though the am sure it is for some ultra cool tactical reason) sit a little high, you can't really hold your hands in the pockets. It is the only thing I have worn that has the irresistible power of making others come up and pet me.![]()
I picked mine up here new a few years back splitting a pack of two with our resident Canadian bagpiper!

I'm thinking of grabbing a second one at some point, the Yeti colour, and also looking out for the camo ones they apparently have in the works...

I have items from both.....DRI DUCK is built well.... Arbor Wear is very solid -- built for Tree Workers -- hence the name. They have a shop in NE Ohio.
Local outdoor shop owner told me he now has VOORMI in stock. He waited 3 years to get the brand as he wanted an offering of US Made gear for his customers ...

Seriously? Ben posts about fleece and I’m the first to think of this?

My favorite is less piley than you are looking for but it’s so warm. The Patagonia R2 Techface hoody. Awesome.

I use the patagucci R1 as a base layer for winter sports. The synchilla I use from fall to spring and even in the summer cool mornings and evenings, it’s a great piece, warm, comfortable and regulates temperature well.

R1 is one of the greatest base/light midlayers ever created. With a long sleeve capilene, R1 hoody, Nano Puff jacket, and hard shell I’ve been good in very extreme cold as long as you keep moving.Captdave wrote:I use the patagucci R1 as a base layer for winter sports. Hell yeah. Dad and I were going to do that one back in June of 2019 but schedules didn’t work out. Ended up doing Mt. Washington instead. The journey to Katahdin is worth it. Certainly not easy to even just get to the park as it is literally in the middle of nowhere and many many hours of driving from wherever you are coming from, but IMO it's the most beautiful and challenging mountain on the east coast. We had to ski in 19 miles just to get to the base of it. Summer is obviously easier but still a pain in the butt.
My avatar is summit day in 2015. Did not make it all the way up in 2016 due to weather.

that wasn't to mean they are bad. they are common place/affordable and a all around good product for everyday use. i also like gerry, eddier bauer and ll bean. if i want to go to the next level i would look at patagonia, marmot, mountain hardware, Arc’teryx, OR, and kuhl. i believe my next one is going to be something from cotopaxi.BBK357 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 18, 2022 11:07 amI get it….
