My wife and I were debating whether to continue with the chickens.

We've been doing this for about 8 years.

Were down to 3 chickens, only one of them laying.


Decided to keep things going and added 5 more this morning.

Are the ones that aren't laying good to eat? I'm assuming the chickens we buy at the store are male. Are hens just as good to eat?

Hens that are at the end of their laying life are considered a by-product of the egg industry, unlike broilers that are reared for meat
and are a valuable food product. If spent hens do go into the human food chain, they are generally used in products such as soups, stock or stews.

The really good laying hens (leghorns) are not good meat birds imo, unless they are pumped with a bunch of shit to fatten them up.

Are those Isa's or Rhode Island Reds?

We just added 4 more this last fall and they are already laying. We are up to 12 hens now. Funny we were also talking about not getting anymore.

Right now one of our Easter Egger's is being super broody.

Cool. We have one of the Stars. She is a good layer.

The breeder said they would lay eggs pretty soon; they found a good number of eggs within the shipment of pullets.

Got our first egg this morning.
