US Navy Marathon deck chronometer

Post by River Rat » Wed Jul 17, 2024 9:18 am

Saw this the other day on eBay. Was sold for parts was missing batteries so seller had no idea if it worked. Had make offer I offered 75 bucks it's mine now. Should get it next week. The batteries are tough to get LR50 1.5-volt batteries used in cameras and other equipment. Only place I found batteries was online no local stores carry them. So ordered a few batteries might work I can see why the seller did not test it too much trouble getting batteries. These were used by the US Navy for navigation and replaced the Hamilton Model 21 chronometers now these are probably gone from the Navy this is the second type quartz chronometer the Navy used the other was by Waltham I got one of those too. Bet the Navy don't use ether one today. Make me wonder what they use today as back up if an enemy takes out our GPS satellites we would be screwed.

Received it the other day. Got the batteries today. When the ad said sold for parts and repairs the long stem screws into the movement. The tip of the part that's in the movement broke off and is in the long stem that can be unscrewed from the stem now getting that part repaired in the movement I hope my watchmaker can fix. The movement works and the hacking works. There's a work around to set the time four screws hold the dial on remove dial set the hands by hand that way or hack it wait for the correct time and un-hack it. Just glad the movement works.

Should be a threaded part sticking out of the movement where the arrow is.

The long stem that would screw into the movement you can see the tip of the broken piece. Hope it can be repaired but still works and work arounds to set the time so still a good deal.
