Birth Year Models?

Post by ezcheese » Tue Feb 14, 2023 5:41 am

How many of you have obtained or are in search of a birth year model of a particular watch? I know collectiors in general like to get their hands on birth year items and am curious how big that is with vintage watches. I guess it depends to some extent on how old we all are right?

my only birth year watch -1967- was this Seiko 7625 Sportmatic.
cool watch, however, I am not sentimental about birth year, I tired it and that was that and sold it

Lordy there's a lot of old farts on here 😅
I have a birth year (68) Bulova tuning fork watch. Rarely wear it, but it was given to me by a departed friend, so it stays.
Also have a 68 seiko, also very small by today's standards, never wear it.
There was a ghost bezel blue Tudor snowflake floating around here for a while that I would have loved, but out of my price range.

This!

for you younger folk - buy it as early as possible, because when you get to be old, finding a birth year diver becomes very expensive! None of the 3 B year divers for me go for less than 5 figures, if you can find one at all...

Passively looking for a birth year Sub or Sea Dweller, 1980.

I’d probably get rid of the Starbucks for that.

My 6309 has a 79 case, but a 81 movement, so that counts in my eyes. I'd be fine with an 5513, not interested in the stratospheric pricing though.

I kinda do this with cars too, "What 1981 car would I want?". Options aren't awesome, so the clear choice is always a 911SC

I have one. A 16660 “transitional” Sea-Dweller from 1986. My wife gave it to me for my 30th birthday.

I once bought a sterling silver Waltham that had a 1918 movement (my dad's birth year) and a 1921 case (my mom's birth year). I sold it about five years later.

Very cool. I briefly lived in Waltham and saw the original Waltham factory down by the river and I have always thought that that brand should be revived with a USA-based operation from soup to nuts. Looks like (according to wikipedia) that an "Italian-American" dude owns the brand now and they're making retro versions of a field watch with Sellita or Soprod options. https://watchangels.ch/en/watches/waltham-field-marine/

Problem with being too old the cost goes up on birth year watches so your younger ones get it now or the picking will be slim. Like for me a Rolex sub out of the question. Here is what I got as a birth year watch.

The one above for sure due to paperwork. Most know I am a military nut. Got these two possible birth year for me but these are hard to date no records to be found but close.

The Junghans might be for sure early dial but the Hanhart if it was made the last year, they made these just might be wish these had issued date on the case.

There's probably some whipper snapper with a birth-year SXK007. I think they started making them in '96.
