Contemplating picking one up.

Why the crazy variance in prices?

What does proof-proof mean?

Let’er rip

proof - proof came before the days of politicly correct "resist" and usually are more collectable as such.

also slight movement variations exist between the 6105A vs 6105B, the latter featuring a quick set date and hacking movement.

and of course the difference in case shape between the more tonneau shaped 6105-8000 vs the Capt Willard 6105-8110

that's all I have.....I'm sure the more well versed will chime in shortly

The crazy prices are due to the hype generating by collectors/forums/blogs etc. Most of it not all of them had crown gasket issues. So the chrome lume pod surrounds are usually deteriorated. Only a few guys can actually change out the crown gaskets, they were not made to be changed. They were a throw away part. The other issue is the mainspring is not made to be serviced, so very guys can do this. I actually like the 8000 model the best, but the 8110 has more pull in the resale market. The "proof-proof" vs "resist" is just an age indicator based on dial labeling. The proof is older.

What does proof-proof mean?
Long term lurker, first time poster.*
Proof-proof means that it says Waterproof on the dial and also on the caseback.
If you were so inclined you should be able to collect:
Proof-proof
Proof-resist
Resist-proof
And Resist-resist
In both 8000 and 8110 versions (I believe).

These were the first watches I got into around 2010. Back then 6105's with aftermarket/(fake) dials regularly sold for more than genuine ones. That's just what (some) people liked the look of.
Proper dials with crisp squared lume surrounds are a thing of beauty.
Deep dive into the world of bezel inserts, crowns, hands and even the variety of original crystals.
Same as Terry, I actually prefer the look of the 8000/8009 over the 8110/8119 but they don't have a click bezel, its just a smooth rotation.

*I'd better pull my finger out and do a proper intro now.

The other guys already covered the facts so I'll just leave a word of caution. The market is littered with franken watches with aftermarket parts. Dials, bezels, hands, date wheels, you name it.

Here is one for sale and some more history of it. I have no clue is the price is good or not. This site does seem to get some cool looking vintage Seiko's

the potential pitfalls of the 6105 scared me off toward the 6306/6309. While they're not immune to issues, I found it a bit easier and cheaper.

Even got a bit lucky in finding a couple local working donor 6309s off facebook market with good crown/stems/bezels. My son should be gtg for life unless he sells them all the second i die.

Agree…I’m temporarily scratching the itch cheaply.

I know it’s not the “same”, but it works for now.

Function wise the 6309 is a way better buy imo.

The owner of that site is a really good dude who knows Seiko's. But the prices on 6105's are ludicrous imo. At the most it is a good 5-800 watch.
