4Runner? GX? Land Cruiser?
Pretty funny video that surfaces the overlap between so many off road Toyotas in North America now.
I do think it’s nice that they have separated versions from the factory that are either tailored to higher speed off-roading with the TRD Pro and the new trim level that is more overlanding and rock crawling focused.

They’re all essentially the same truck. Last true Land Cruiser was the 200-Series.
Re: 4Runner? GX? Land Cruiser?
I am eyeballing the Land Cruiser 1958 trim. I’m excited for them to come out.

Love the new 4Runner.
The new Prado is not a true LC. It’s nice and I’d take one, but not an LC.
I’m stuck with this 2003 for the time being.

I like the new Land Cruiser and think it was a wise move for Toyota, especially for those who commute daily.
The new 4Runner makes me really glad I scored my 2022 Off Road Premium when I did. Now that it’s been built out, it’s just perfection.
Today we installed a heated steering wheel.

That’s the one I want, too. It’s way more than I can spend on my daily, though. I can’t wait to see the ADM stickers on these.apnk wrote:I am eyeballing the Land Cruiser 1958 trim. I’m excited for them to come out.

Very mixed opinions in the LC world.
These are interesting:

BTW I know people are giving the new 250 a hard time, but the Prado is also a decent platform. We drove this one across Costa Rica with no drama and the fuel economy was insane (deisel)

I love the new LC design and like the direction Toyota is going with their lineup. A lot of folks are uneasy about their move away from NA engines to the new turbo inline 4's, but folks forget that the mid 80's Toyota trucks/SUV's were powered by the legendary 22R 2.4L turbo 4. When they moved to an NA v6 it had tons of reliability issues.
I'm also not so big on the gatekeeping of what a "real" Landcruiser is. The Land Cruisers name has always been a category of different SUV's in Toyota's lineup around the world which includes the Prado and the more hardcore 70 series to go with the "Station Wagon" LC that the USA has traditionally received.
I'm not as much of a fan of the new 4Runner design, but I'm sure it will grow on me. A little over-styled for my taste. I'm sure it will be a great truck.
I bought this last fall... and thought long and hard about waiting for the new LC... but I'm a fan of the more narrow/compact design of the current gen of 4Runner. I don't like large vehicles. Toyota is talking about an FJ styled smaller EV off roader. I'll probably keep this for 8-10 years and hope that by then there will be a cool off road EV available with a long range.

I love the last version of the 4 runner. The anniversary edition they did was gorgeous. I’m not a big fan of the new design either.dnslater wrote:I love the new LC design and like the direction Toyota is going with their lineup. I like the LC 1958 because of the round headlights, but it’s pretty expensive with cloth seats and not a lot of amenities. I think it starts at $56,000?
At that price I would just get a base LX GX 550 for a few grand more.

Re: 4Runner? GX? Land Cruiser?
Yeah, that 1958 is pretty awesome but on paper it's a little tougher to justify vs a base 4Runner with similar options... although the LC does come standard with some better goodies and the hybrid drivetrain. I think the GX starts at over $10k more. I've heard rumors that the new LC was built to a higher spec for longevity for interior bits, switchgear, etc.. than the 4Runner to stay true to the LC name... but who knows.tattoo chef wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2024 4:55 am

Regardless, I love the LC styling. In the USA it has always served the role of a reliable premium off roader for people that don't want the stigma of a luxury badge, and it should still serve that role well.

Looks good. Are those the LFD roof rack cross bars? If so, how do you like them?dnslater wrote:I love the new LC design and like the direction Toyota is going with their lineup. Re: 4Runner? GX? Land Cruiser?
Thanks
Yes this kit which goes on the OEM roof rails. Wanted something that allows me to use my Yakima Skybox along with easily strap on things like traction boards for dispersed camping trips. Easy install.
https://lfdoffroad.com/collections/5th- ... en-4runner
Only negative is that the wind fairing is integrated into the front bar so I will need to remove it to put the Skybox on. Just 4 bolts though so not a big deal.
They also make an aluminum version which you might consider for PNW use.
Re: 4Runner? GX? Land Cruiser?
I have considered just two cross bars to attach traction boards, maybe Rotopax.dnslater wrote:Thanks

How is the wind noise? I’m a bit concerned about the fairing piece touching the roof and wear on the paint.
Re: 4Runner? GX? Land Cruiser?
Don’t love the new 4 Runner design as much as the 5th gen, and also not loving the 4 cylinder, with or without hybrid; just don’t see it as being as reliable as the current dinosaur 6, although Toyota knows how to make a hybrid. I actually love the LC250 otherwise. For me, it’s the GX Those look absolutely killer, and it seems the overtrail models are absolutely capable out of the box. Still not mad I have a 2023 5th gen 4 Runner though. There’s a lot of crossover between these 3, and I would have thought Toyota would have done more to differentiate the LC and the 4 Runner.
Re: 4Runner? GX? Land Cruiser?
So a 30 minute ECU update. Would be nice if that could be done over the air like with EV's.

I snagged a 2023 4Runner late last year and glad I did before it's discontinued. Hoping it lasts me 10 years .
Re: 4Runner? GX? Land Cruiser?
10 years easy. We’re planning on keeping our 21 Land Cruiser and Tundra till we’re dead.
