Retiring today

Post by andy tims » Tue Jun 25, 2024 11:25 pm

Today is my last day of work, so I thought I'd post a few shots of some of the projects I've led from a commercial perspective, or at least played a meaningful role in.
I've had a great career, starting with a year at the CITB training college in Bircham Newton, near Kings Lynn, then as a management trainee with a local contractor, RA Keen who went bust after I'd been with them 10 months. I then joined Tilford Builders, working under the Chief QS / Estimator, Peter Covey. A lovely man (sadly no longer with us) who I owe so much to. Next was Scientific Lesser, a specialist Laboratory Design & Build Contractor and I then moved to the big league with Bovis Construction. After 6 years at Bovis, I joined (as several did) Mace, then a relatively small firm, who are now amongst the biggest Contractor / Consultancy businesses in the UK. After a further 6 years, I decide to try the consultancy side of the industry, spending 4.5 years at Turner & Townsend before joining EC Harris as a Partner in 2005. EC Harris became Arcadis in 2014 & I've ended my career with them after 19 years.
Naturally, there have been ups & downs and my lovely wfe Jane has been my rock throughout it all.

One of the best things about a career in construction is the legacy we all leave in the form of the projects we work on, but more important is the positive impact we can have on those we work with and who work for us.

The projects are in rough chronological order

Very cool. Even after 30 years, still get a thrill seeing a project go from 50% drawings to punchlist.

Enjoy - you deserve it.

and an amazing legacy and memories.

So what is the retirement watch purchase? It calls for something special.

It doesn't use numbers or moving hands

Jealous. And not far behind you, just a few more years.

Lotta lovely buildings there. I'm sure you've got plenty of stories to tell from all of those projects.

Looks like you left a great legacy. As much as I love my job, being in accounting doesn’t leave much of a legacy.

+1 on the retirement watch. Maybe something that reflects your career. I’m thinking AP Royal Oak.

Congrats! I retired 2 year ago and know that feeling well. I was an environmental engineer and project manager. We cleaned up a lot of hazardous waste sites and it was always cool to see the "after pictures" and see new healthy vegetation growing. The thing I miss most is seeing long time colleagues at the conferences I use to go to and/or organize. I wish you the best and hope you enjoy the next chapter.
