Er... Wow.

Post by craniotes » Thu Sep 08, 2011 11:52 am

I stopped by the Panerai boutique this afternoon to check out the new 2011 collection (and drink a couple of glasses of prosecco), and all I can say is that they totally nailed it:

The 372 on my friend, Howard's wrist:

The 372 was the star of the show, IMO, but that Bronzo is really something else in person. I've never been a huge fan of the 305 (dial is too spare, don't like the indexes, and I prefer a thicker bezel), but I'd inflict bodily harm on someone to put the 382 on my wrist.

Watch your back, Luke...

Regards,
Adam

PS - Sorry about the lousy cameraphone pics, but my wife stole the point and shoot for our son's first day of kindergarten this morning and I forgot to steal it back.

I really like that one on the far right of the first pic.

I find myself constantly jealous of our NYC friends. So much fun, all the time. Maybe I need to move to NYC?

That would be the 386 (only $14.5K, I believe). It sports the same composite case as the 339 LE, but houses the P.9000 in-house movement, rather than the more exclusive 8-day movement, and of course, it's a 1950-inspired Luminor case and not a Radiomir. Wears like a dream, but judging from the buzz on paneristi.com, all the kinks in the composite material haven't been ironed out yet (folks are complaining of spotting, scratches, etc...).

Regards,
Adam

PS - And yes, you should move to NYC.

Bronze cases really looks great with the additional detail. Too many plain bronze cases out there.

Very nice! I'm going to attempt to make it up to Beverly Hills to check those out next week. I'm trying to talk myself out of the 372...

Good luck with that (it's even better looking in person). Unfortunately for me, after my JLC binge, I'm going to have to sit this one out. I did manage to snag a 372 through an AD in St. Maarten of all places (same guy I got my AP Diver from; he's only getting two and guess who's #2 on his list?), but I'm going to pass it along to a friend who's a bit more fiscally solvent than I am. It lands in October...

Sigh.

Anyway, be sure to report back after you check 'em out.

Thanks for the pics Adam. I'm pretty high up on the West Coast list for the 372. That said, I'm going to have to make some painful cuts to make it happen. I've never seen it in person and would love to hear more about it - good and bad.

No bad. Only good. If my buddy doesn't pass on the one I have reserved, I may have a fall-back fella to turn to, but honestly, my back's against the wall money-wise. As much as I'd love to be the first kid on my block with one of these, I'll probably have to wait until the furor dies down and they become more readily available in 2012. Come hell or high water, though, I will own one at some point down the road.

Anyway, it's an amazing watch in person -- perhaps the best I've seen from Panerai -- and it captures the essence of the brand perfectly.

Adam

Interesting, so would you trade in the 243 for one of these instead? Referring to the 372.
I know different beasts, but is it worth the sacrifice?

Just curious.
thx.

Totally.

I probably won't do it, though, if only because I think I'll be able to score one down the road without forcing my beloved 243 to fall on its sword (remember, this isn't an LE). Mind you, in this hobby I've long since learned to never say "never". ;)

I was hoping that I wouldn't like it once I handled it in person (with only 1000 made, scoring one at this point is impossible).

No dice. It's awesome.

Like I said earlier, I'm not a fan of the 305, but this one I'd hurt people for (like Luke...).

The 372 is winner, winner, chicken dinner for OP. I'm trying to convince myself that a fresh new SE with gold hands and a brown dial is going to sway me from picking one up (and save me serious $$$ in the process), but as of today, I'm not sure that's going to happen. From all I've seen and read about this one, I'm convinced this might be the best thing OP has ever released. I'm probably #6000 on the NY boutique waiting list (although a good word from our resident PAM god might help), but I might have managed to snag the last of the promised haul my closest NC AD has been promised. Anyway, the 382 and the 368 are epic as well, as is the 373.

I was first on the list for the 372 with my AD but I had to pass - I've tried on pretty much every modern 47mm PAM and they are just too big and I'm trending away from larger watches... However, I will still probably have one in a year or so because I haven't been PAM-less for some time and I'm already thinking about moving the DLC'd 000 - it's badass, but I'm just not getting to wear it enough and the JLC is the perfect "black" watch for me (that and I'm planning on picking up the next Expy II in a few weeks).

Thanks for the pics, Adam as always...
