Sinn U1 vs. Omega SMP Quartz

Post by DocB » Sun Mar 18, 2012 7:12 pm

Trying to decide whether to keep my SMP 2541.80 or dump it and get a U1.

Why would YOU choose one over the other?

So...a Bond or a U1?

U1 - I don't like the Bond hands. If we were talking a SMP 2254, I would keep the SMP or buy the U1 too.

I wish I wasn't such a label whore.

I admit to being concerned with what people think when they look at the watch on my wrist.

It's a curse, as although I'd love to indulge my inner WIS, I'm drawn to Rolex, Omega, Breitling, etc. for the above reason.

I feel so ashamed.

hands down I would stick with the Omega. the U1 is a acquired taste imo. and the SMP goes with any look you are going for.

Why would I choose one over the other? First and foremost, because you've already enjoyed the Omega and it sounds like it's time to move on. The U1 is cool, I've enjoyed two, though it isn't the end all. I suspect it too would soon be sold or traded.

It's cool you admit to being a brand whore and having a concern for image. This seems somewhat in conflict with the fact you wear a quartz Omega. The masses who you may seek approval from, may think you are wearing a fake when they notice the tick-tock of your seconds hand.

That said, F the masses, break the bonds that enslave you and get the Sinn.

I think Terry is right, the U1 is an acquired taste but it will get way more attention from "the masses" than the Omega and instead of being asked "is it a fake?" you will be asked "what is it?" and you can reel off the Submarine steel story etc. I say dump the SMP and go U1.

I love my U1, but it probably isn't as flexible/versatile as the Omega SMP. Not a problem as i own more than one watch. If I had to go with one watch to wear all the time, the Omega SMP automatic would be on my short list.

If you're a label whore, I would dump the quartz watch.

For anyone whose going to notice a watch and a watch that isn't a Rolex, a quartz watch screams mall watch.

I have both.

If I had to choose one, I'd choose the U1.

But, the SMP is a more versatile watch. It dresses up better than the U1.

Decisions, decisions...

I'm selling the quartz and sitting on the cash for a while until I figure out what to buy next.

I'm open to suggestions, since I've been away from the watch world for a bit.

Follow your current path, grasshoppah! The U1 ROCKS.

And, it looks really cool with a French blue dress shirt.

Get an automatic Omega. Forget the Sinn.

Have you considered the UX? Quartz but COSC certified and almost unlimited water resistance. Plus, while I personally love the lego hands on the U1, the sword hands on the UX may be more palatable for some.

It's always nice to have a story to go with the watch.

U1 is a helluva watch. You can't go wrong.

Don't worry what others think, as you have us to give you validation  .

I have now owned my U1-T for 8 months. I get the occasional "nice watch", but really only one person genuinely recognized it and flipped. He was my waiter at a fairly high end restaurant.

There is a group of guys I work with who all sport similar Breitlings and wear them like it's club membership. They just don't get it when they see me sport a vintage Bulova Spaceview or rare limited edition G-Shock and have never heard of brands like Sinn and Ball. But.... I wouldn't want them to get it.

Been thinking about this lately as well. There are some good deals out there on the UX.

Sinn U1 all day everyday, but not if it's your only watch. One of the few WUS pseudo-WIS fanboy watches I actually like.

I vote ux for a fair quartz v quartz comparison. But given the choices I'd take a U1 any day. Just make sure to splurge on the bracelet. Its what makes the watch imo.Image

So I didn't get the U1 after all.

I'm using the cash to take the wife and baby to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios this weekend.

Sorry to disappoint, but good husband and father duties come first.
