I have been thinking about making a few changes
I have been thinking about making a few changes
I have really been enveloped with watches the past few months more so than ever, and that really says something for me as I have always been and extreme watch freak my whole life. I have always wanted to know the extreme joy that all of you do when you look at your wrist and have a piece of mechanical art to tell time for you. As some of you know I am a poor fella that works on guns for a living. I have even been looking for a job for the past 7 months with no luck. I can't just save my money for one like some of you can. My wife does not understand or much less care what I want or love. She feels that she is entitled to all of the money I make. I haven't bought myself anything of value in the past 10 years due to this no shit!! All of the things I have I have traded for over the years. What I am thinking of doing is trading or selling my Ernest Emerson custom CQC-5 for a really nice watch like a Longines Legend Diver or a Tudor BB or even a Pelagos. I am serious guys if I were to be able to land one I think I would probably cry. All that keeps me going everyday is the dream of getting one of these three watches I know that's not much of a life, but I have to have something as a goal to keep truckin on ya know. I figure I could get $1800- 2000 for the cqc-5 so maybe I could get a nice watch out of it. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks for your time fellas and I hope each and everyone of you have a super day!!!

Re: I have been thinking about making a few changes
Easiest way to open doors would to be to sell that CQC-5 for cash to a knife enthusiast and then buy the watch you can afford with the cash. While the potential for a deal is probably out there, the chances that a person who understands the value of your knife is going to have the exact watches you want is microscopic.

Re: I have been thinking about making a few changes
Just my opinion, I have always enjoyed a nice time piece, good whisky, and my small but carefully chosen gun collection. But all of that is not at the risk of causing a rift in my marriage.
There are some serious ballers in these forums and I would be lying if I said I haven't thought about plunking down the cash for a very nice time piece but the trade off is not worth it. Especially if it causes a hardship.
After all its just stuff man. My two pesos.

Re: I have been thinking about making a few changes
Sorry, but I'm seeing a lot of red flags here that point towards no new watches. If money is tight, sell what you can to get back on your feet. That's more important than some shiny wrist bling. Trading for a luxury good is still taking money away from funds that could be paying bills or buying necessities.

Re: I have been thinking about making a few changes
watch fund is discretionary income. If I have extra in the discretionary area, I'll have a decent watch, if not and I have to divert funds to the skirt, then I roll with a micro or seiko or something. The key is to be flexible in your approach and enjoy what you have.
DWC is great because there is no snobbery, condescending or crap like that, from Pateks, AP, JLC, etc down the line to Bathys, Seiko, ETC play well in the sandbox together
Good Luck, Dan!

I believe Brice cries every time he gets a new pelagos as well
Good luck, brother. I don't have any advice for you other than don't over spend. I was in the military for 30 years and couldn't afford to buy anything expensive - so I didn't. I've had my share of seikos and (gulp) used invictas until I could afford the real deal and although I'm now a "3 percenter" I still can't ball like some others around here.

Stay within your budget or you'll end up resenting the watch and the skirt will resent you. I agree with Wu. Cash out of the knife then move into a watch. There is some killer value in seikos that you could get your money back out of if you had to cash out to move up into higher end watches or to pay other expenses.

Re: I have been thinking about making a few changes
Hey Dan, I like the idea of selling the knife but as it has been mentioned you might want to do that where it can result in the most $$ exchange, not that you are selling it for profit, but different people have different views and values of things. Some knives forum for example where the custom and unique blade would be appreciated.
Then you can also look and see what else you have that you can sell. I have sold some things like pens, knives, parts and while not a big income, I was able to get a little bit that allowed me to continue forward.
But as it has been mentioned, I would also first ensure by basics are covered and then, and only then, look at the pricier time piece. If I can afford only a Seiko I am happy with it. When I can afford another one then I will be happier...

Re: I have been thinking about making a few changes
It's been covered well already. If your out of work then the money is better used elsewhere. Sell the knife to an Emerson collector buy a $50 gshock and take care of the family. Luxury Watches are discretionary fund entertainment pieces not necessities. Hope things get better for you ASAP.

Re: I have been thinking about making a few changes
As a man you need to have stuff that you enjoy. All work and no play makes jack a dull boy and possibly suicidal.
Sell the custom knife, get a used strider sng and a watch in the $500 range to tide you over and have a future goal. That way your spending under $1000, put the rest away for necessities or saving.
And tell your wife to be nice. My wife is mean too, but she doesn't have total control of my money. We have separate accounts and that will not change.

Toys for yourself come a distant second.

Without knowing his story it sounds like he brings in enough income doing gunsmith work that pays the necessities.
All the money that is already tied up in his custom knife can be partially used for something cool for himself. He's a hard working man and deserves something.
Of course my advice should be ignored if you can't meet your regular bills. But I have a demanding wife and know how it is when I have extra cash and she has other plans for it.

Hey Dan,
Tough to understand the situation fully based upon your post, but your comments do raise red flags.
1. No item of discretionary acquisition can actually provide the owner with true enjoyment if other financial concerns are simultaneously gnawing at the conscience - so I'd avoid any significant expenses for discretionary items until your situation improves - which we all at DWC hope it will;
2. You and your wife appear to need to have discussion about money and fair allocation of expenses. Clearly you are frustrated at the situation and that's not good.
3. Sell the knife, buy a nice but less expensive watch for your enjoyment, and try to come to an agreement with the wife on the financial way forward.
4. Get one of your grails when the situation permits. Only then will you truly to be able to enjoy that watch.
Good luck Dan!

Re: I have been thinking about making a few changes
First off your post is sad and im guessing the watch solution is secondary to other issues.
But this is a watch forum so screw any psychoanalysis.
Do any micro brand watches get you excited or inspired ?
Like others have said sell the knife first to have your budget at the ready. 2nd watch recon it like a mad fool to score 1 or 2 models your seeking. In the mean time try and think of extra projects to basically cover your budget before you even buy it.
Id keep the buy under 1k period with a wife who assumes possession of anything of value im surprised you still have the knife. Like someone said if you spent 2k on a watch while everything else around you needs money or help the watch will become a kink or a burden.
All the best and good luck bro. I hope you find that great job so this whole topic can be less of a worry or concern in the future.

Re: I have been thinking about making a few changes
I'm all but out of the watch hobby. At one time I had around 30 or so watches. No I'm down to just a couple. One thing I learned, Is don't "settle" for a watch when it's not the one you want. Wasted money. If I would have stuck to my guns and found a Rolex GMT early on, I would have never spent/lost so much on watches. Sell a few things, but make sure you are getting something you really want.

Re: I have been thinking about making a few changes
It sounds like the monetary situation with the wife needs addressing. My wife and I have hobbies that are a bit costly. She prefers mid to higher end purses and myself watches while sharing an interest in sunglasses. I now only own 2 Seikos totaling under $1k and while I have had a good amount more involved in the hobby at one time, this is well within my preferred comfort zone. I do not like spending extravagantly in general which may have something to do with why it has never been a concern in our relationship. Good luck to you in what you decide to do. Some great choices out there from $200-$2000.
